Tokyo Anime Festival this weekend

Postby ResearchKnowledge » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:35 pm

So...the Tokyo International Anime Festival is this upcoming weekend. I used to dabble a little in Anime but I was never too much into it. Anyway, what anime should I read, or manga should I watch before I go so that I can feel less alienated? I know this is short notice, but if anyone can recommend how I can prep myself so that I can enjoy myself more.

(BTW, if it was expensive like U.S. conventions I would not go, but it is about 1000 yen, so I will check it out).

Go as a little girl, and the Japanese crowd part of the crowd can feel you.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

One Piece is the most popular manga in Japan for good reason. Read up here:

She really doesn't have to do much to complete it. You just wear her as a muzzle.....

Okay,

I don`t cosplay, and I even think there was something on their website saying that it was against the rules to attend the event dressed in costume (I can`t see how they would enforce that though).

Anyway...any body w/ a link to a forum where I can talk about this event and possibly get some serious answers?

(Kyle`s Dad in the Prius episode voice): Thanks

Watch DeathNote, Dragonball, Cowboy Bebop, AfroSamurai to start. Maybe Evangelion but in the end its like the movies, either you like it or you don't. (The genre/topic) Why not just go without knowing/researching anything, something is bound to catch your eye and you can start from there. I still can't understand why you would want to "research" it before you go. It's not like there is going to be a midterm assessment on what you know/saw.... Have fun at the event.

Sorry mate, but if you read this forum for long enough, you can probably see that anime and cosplay gets lots of ridicule around here. :D

Not sure where you would get serious answers on your question.

I have absolutely no clue who Kyle is, or what his Dad's voice sounds like in "the Prius episode".
I thought I was up on current TV shows, but that reference is just a tad TOO obscure (I must be getting old...).

I am going to regret this, but I'll post it anyways.
Fine you want a serious answer, I'll dig deep into my inner otaku and give you a serious answer, as some have already pointed out, Dragonball Z, One Piece, Evangelion are high on the list of popularity. Personally, I dig Gundam, but some series are hit-or-miss. Fullmetal Alchemist is highly popular with kids and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also very popular, then you got Naruto and Bleach which have gotten to the point where they have ran out of fresh ideas 5 years ago and became mind numbing to watch, they are just milking the story to see how many episodes they can make. FLCL would definitly be considered a cult classic. Also another personal favorite of mine would be the Ghost in the Shell series because you can look at it as an idea of what Japan could look like in 100 years if they can get the technology to work, also the dialog actually makes you think instead of mind numbing bs in the majority of anime. Samurai Champloo and Trinity Blood are also interesting, but not very well know in Japan and more well known in the states thanks to Adult Swim. Classic Anime would be Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, but try talking to a Japanese person about it and they don't know what you are talking about. I watched these animes years ago and have kind of lost interest when I moved to Japan to see how Japanese people really view anime. Also I never really got into manga, but use it to study kanji.

I have absolutely no clue who Kyle is, or what his Dad's voice sounds like in "the Prius episode".

Its from South Park, just think of the gayest way of saying "Thanks" possible and that is it.

Well, since you're a serious Researcher of Knowledge, I'd recommend ann.com. Other than that, let me google it for you. ;)

-I would also add Harlock, ssx endless orbit and GE999.
-Me bitch was more the generashiun of space battlehip Yamato (and when drunk enough can still thing the theme song while stomping on the tables until they break).
-The original Macross saga, go straight to the movie who got excellent production values. because the tv show version was a complete abominashiun.(avoid the amurikunised version called Robotech, where Mimney songs are done by Reba West who was either a cowgirl who couldn't find her poledancing bar anymore and had to sing them for the greyhound money to home OR just a random cat whose tail was repeatedly crushed by slamming a door on it).
Secret of blue water was also cool-ish. And/or gunbuster. (lotsa gainax, gainax peeps dere).

For evangelion... the music is awesome... animation gots up and downs... Storyline... they just didn't knew what they were doing and they get caught in metaphysical namedropping hopping that people would interpret the fact they understood nothing as being their fault and not just that... their was no meaning whatsoever... (the final episode could aswell be Hulk Hogan shouting you that the lesson here was that you must brush your teeth and eat fibers... would have made more sense). I watched eva just for the scene with the Renault Alpine 310 who has always been mah dream car since I wuz a kitten... Image But the way they are overmilking the license is getting a real shame. The new movies are totally parasitic, they re-tell the same thing while making minor changes to add remove characters to have more goods to sells, but in fine... it's just beating a dead horse... methink...
