OK, well it looks like you're an otaku yourself. - - Except you're animephobic, come out of the closet sweety, it ain't so bad.

Seriously normal people don't get so worked up about anime.

Andocrates, It's no use. Charles hates anime. There's no point arguing with him about it. It's best to just let it go.

Believe me, I have plenty of legitimate reasons to get worked up about anime. I would be happy to ignore the existence of anime, if those goddamn otaku would leave me alone. I have what they can never have, a good level of fluency. And they can't let it drop when I refuse to help them understand their cartoons. Once I had to get the police to intervene, when one particularly demented otaku kept harassing me because I wouldn't take his obsession as seriously as he did. He got expelled from school. Is anime worth sacrificing your academic career?
Someday I'll have to tell you guys the full story of that otaku who got arrested for showing hentai to little kids. It's pretty damn amazing. He actually used to follow me around, goddam that was annoying. He even followed me to JAPAN once. But that's a long story.

I can show you a fine upstanding doctor who got arrested for having gay sex at a rest stop, that doesn't say anything about doctors.

I really doubt you get hassled by otaku on a daily basis. It's like saying "Oh those dammed stamp collectors, why won't they leave me alone?" Have you ever tried to be nice? Just humor them and go on your way, when you argue with them you start a relationship. If you just patronize them they will lose interest in you.

I enjoy your posts. I'm curious, though, about who you feel is qualified to speak about film theory.

I remember your earlier post in American Oyaji's thread

..unless he's the president of the local medical association and the local doctors consider him a role model. As is the analogous case in the otaku I mentioned.

No, it was worse than that, more than a daily occurence when I worked around the Japanese language circles. Sure, otaku are more common amongst J language students, that's why I separated from those groups, it's their loss not mine.
Being nice to them doesn't work, they just think you're interested in their weirdness. Being patronizing or humoring them doesn't work, they're so dense they mistake that for interest in their weirdness. Sometimes the only thing that works is to scream in their face that you're not interested in their weirdness, and to make it abundantly clear they will get that sort of abusive treatment whenever they try to talk to you. And sometimes even that doesn't work, only being hauled away in handcuffs by the police will stop them.
There is something truly demented about otaku, they are so involved in their little world, it is inconcievable to them that everyone wouldn't be interested in their weird obsession if only they could show it and explain it to people. Sorry, I'm not interested.

I've done nothing to encourage them, quite the opposite.

Being an Otaku magnet has nothing to do with whether you try to encourage them or not. It is a physical property, like gravity. Maybe it is a form of atonement for some terrible sin you commited in your previous life. :hehe:
