oh god. A private company trying to dictate manners...... is it just me or are the old salarymen like the one in the poster with the headphones kid are twice as rude as the people these posters are directed at? I saw a 50 something salary man in a suit pissing off of the middle of the platform in front of about 30 people just last night. I seem to see that about once or twice a week.

I recommend the whole article. It's VERY good and on point.

Although it is rather poor at several points.

..the United States and Europe have vast electronics, automobile and biotech industries, but none of them invented the Nintendo Wii, the Toyota Prius or the synthetic embryonic stem cell.

Good point. Maybe his point would have been better made as saying no one has made more money or popularized those items more than Japan.

Yes - in fact, I just got back from picking up a can of stem cells over at FamilyMart. This week they are selling "kikan gentei" watermelon flavor variety, for the summer.

The theme of the article seemed to be Japan's primacy in innovation, not its excellent marketing. So I think his basic premise is unsupported.

The sprawling men on their subway seats and the young chicks with their mascara are nowhere and don't even know it - they're ready to emigrate to LA and be happy and eventually miserable - its a different strata.

Don't underestimate those young chicks and their mascara. I have often said, a country like Japan has few natural resources but their people, there may come a time when marketing their persona may become Japan's only economic advantage. Look at how many Western idiots spend their money trying to emulate Japanese fashions and fads. Someone had to come up with those crazy fads like yamamba, ganguro, etc., they weren't invented by an editor at An-An, some crazy girl thought it up first.

I stand corrected. That'll teach me for taking Greji's lead when identifying the furries. It seems he doesn't care what he hits. :D

Slightly off topic, but was there a jumper on the Yamanote today? My boss called and we couldn't hear shit cause of the announcer screaming in the background. Train was delayed 40min?

Yes, there was one at Tamachi. It must have caused quite a disruption because it hit all the newswires around 8:00am.

Why does that guy look so angry when he's about to get a ********* on the train?

As usual, Taro's version of the sign was an artistic rendition of the original. And once again brilliant, though I think this is the 2nd one featuring a blowjob.

I encountered a related train manners problem yesterday that I think deserves its own poster. It was in the train station, not in the train itself. But I nearly got run down by a guy who was walking through the station while typing on a notebook computer. He had it balanced in one palm and was typing with the other while walking full speed toward his platform. I have to say it was kind of impressive, but I think there is a good chance that computer ended up shattered into pieces on the ground before he got where he was going.

Taro - a Tokyo Blogger that also follows the metro posters is having a competition.

I think you need to enter with some of your photoshopped efforts.

A Japanese blogger has another perspective one of the Metro posters. The caption reads "Who is the weakest?". The old guy with the stick is labelled having 40 million yen in savings a living a life of leisure. The bloke looking down is a 3 million yen a year drudge working for an abusive employer. The girl is a temp worker on 2.5million yen and the baseball cap guy is a 2 million yen a year freeter. Meanwhile, the pregnant women is the well-kept wife of a businessman on 10 million a year.

That's an interesting point the blogger makes, though I can't find any text elaborating on his/her thoughts on the matter.

true but this is what I see numbers and logic wise:
1. old man is only going one or two stops... make the fucker stand

2. abused salary man needs to sit the fuck down... or else he will jump in front of the train and fuck up everyone's day.

3. temp-worker chick is sore from banging her boss the night before and is depressed cause she wont get to tie the knot cause he is married... leaving her is play meat and with no additional benefits despite the few dates they go on.

4. dude with the cap is just like any other gaki around... dont care about anything as long as he can sleep off his drunk from the last night and wake up to do it again and hopefully get laid this time...

5. pregnant lady has a wealthy husband... why the fuck are you on the train? take a cab, drive your plush car for fuck sake.

but by all means, the two men sitting down should be standing the fuck up and let the pregnant lady have first seating, then the lady, then the old man. Why the old man last? cause he is a man and should let the ladies sit comfortablly... witch is usually on the left or right side... so he gets to sit in the middle

You are overthinking the situation:

Step 1: Put can of zyklon B in the subway car.
Step 2: Everybody dies.
Step 3: More people can enter the car and also die.
