The theme of the article seemed to be Japan's primacy in innovation, not its excellent marketing. So I think his basic premise is unsupported.

I disagree - it was the fuming, timid, balding old salaryman that made J great after WWII.
The sprawling men on their subway seats and the young chicks with their mascara are nowhere and don't even know it - they're ready to emigrate to LA and be happy and eventually miserable - its a different strata.

Don't underestimate those young chicks and their mascara. I have often said, a country like Japan has few natural resources but their people, there may come a time when marketing their persona may become Japan's only economic advantage. Look at how many Western idiots spend their money trying to emulate Japanese fashions and fads. Someone had to come up with those crazy fads like yamamba, ganguro, etc., they weren't invented by an editor at An-An, some crazy girl thought it up first.

I encountered a related train manners problem yesterday that I think deserves its own poster. It was in the train station, not in the train itself. But I nearly got run down by a guy who was walking through the station while typing on a notebook computer. He had it balanced in one palm and was typing with the other while walking full speed toward his platform. I have to say it was kind of impressive, but I think there is a good chance that computer ended up shattered into pieces on the ground before he got where he was going.

1. old man is only going one or two stops... make the fucker stand

2. abused salary man needs to sit the fuck down... or else he will jump in front of the train and fuck up everyone's day.

3. temp-worker chick is sore from banging her boss the night before and is depressed cause she wont get to tie the knot cause he is married... leaving her is play meat and with no additional benefits despite the few dates they go on.

4. dude with the cap is just like any other gaki around... dont care about anything as long as he can sleep off his drunk from the last night and wake up to do it again and hopefully get laid this time...

5. pregnant lady has a wealthy husband... why the fuck are you on the train? take a cab, drive your plush car for fuck sake.
