The Problems Of Bad Anime Subtitles

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Apr 21, 2009 8:46 am

If you are an anime fan then you may well have seen this series of videos because it is almost a year old. I found them interesting as a take on translating Japanese in general. The presenter declares "In conclusion, fansubs have now become exclusive and cliquey Japanese language lessons, produced by a small group of people who apparently don't want anyone new to get into anime unless they too think the Japanese language is an omnipotent thing passed down on golden plates from God himself". He caused a lively debate which you can see here and here. The word "weabo" crops up a lot.

That was amusing. I have never had a chance to watch "fansubbed" anime until I saw this documentary. And I will be sure to avoid it now.

Now on the other hand, fansubbed porn....

Now I only had time to watch the first couple, but the key difference between fansubs and professional subs is that fansubs are FREE.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Professional translator Peter Durfee (@Durf) has just linked on Twitter to a gallery of some of the worst anime subtitles you are likely to see. Highly recommended:

Fansubs are about 95% accurate... but the 5% tends to be really, really wrong.
