Kyodo: China announces plans for string of animation studios

China on Tuesday announced plans to set up a chain of animation studios supported by tax breaks, to boost Chinese cartoons and values in an industry dominated by Japan. Chinese cartoons are widely shown by the entirely state-owned broadcast system, often focused on folklore, Chinese history or preachy morality tales. Yet they face stiff competition among young viewers from more vibrant foreign competitors, especially Japan's massive animation industry.
...China recently banned a Nike television commercial showing U.S. basketball star LeBron James in a battle with an animated cartoon kung fu master, saying the ad insulted Chinese national dignity. The commercial, pulled from television broadcasts last month, showed James in a video game-style setting defeating the kung fu master, two women in traditional Chinese attire and a pair of dragons, considered a sacred symbol in traditional Chinese culture. The advertisement "violates regulations that mandate that all advertisements in China should uphold national dignity and interest and respect the motherland's culture," the broadcast regulator said in a statement posted on its Web site.

I've watched a lot of Taiwanese cartoons...<yawn>.... folklore, Chinese history and preachy was norm.

That said, "The Monkey King" (1985) was great because that is the best of all the Chinese folktales.

PS: I still waiting to learn what the trendy slang Chinese word is for "anime." Is it some Sino-nipponese transliteration of anime?
