Wired discovers Manboo mangakissa

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Dec 07, 2004 5:10 pm

I was looking forward to an entry for the "newbie reporter" thread but this is a pretty fair description of the place.

Wired: Tokyo's Geek Paradise
What do hipster couples, comic geeks, and hostel-wary backpackers have in common? They all kick it at Manboo, Tokyo's reinvention of the mangakissa. Whereas the traditional comics café is a dank, smoky hovel infested with nerds, Manboo's 43 locations are pure luxe, with big comfy chairs, Internet access, and even showers.
For about $4 an hour, patrons watch the latest DVDs, play PS2 games, and chug bottomless cups of coffee, tea, and cola. Included in the admission price are a computer school for the techno-inept and a nail salon, where the manicured can get a touch-up while flipping through the latest issue of Cawaii ("cute") magazine. And the manga? It's organized in tidy aisles.
If you're exhausted after an evening of clubbing, cough up 11 bucks for the overnight option, and nap on one of the couches or chill in a private room. "We had one guy stay here for 10 days," says Manboo night staffer Masahiro Ozaki. Sure beats paying $35 to crash in a claustrophobic capsule hotel.
