Wanted: 'blue or green hair, blonde eyes & brightly character'

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Nov 29, 2006 10:44 am

Yamanashi English school want ad: "blonde hair blue or green eyes and brightly character"
debito.org, November 28th, 2006
A school in Yamanashi is specifically advertising in the local international association jobs for "blonde blue-eyed brightly" foreigners, because the local kindergarten wants a typical foreigner for acclimatization to "eigojin". It's just business, you see, they explained to me....more...

Damn my Anglo-Saxon blood! I've got brown hair and hazel eyes. :(

I'd love to see someone who's half black with bleach blonde hair and blue eyes apply for the job.

I am not surprised. My university has a "sister school" in Yamanashi, they always want exchange students and exchange teachers, but are notoriously picky, they only want blonde, blue eyed women (it's a girl's school).

I once worked on the admin side in the kids division of a major national English chain. On of my responsibilities was building a pool of teachers who were able & willing to work irregular shifts throughout the year teaching/entertaining at various events. Though Filipina and Indian workers who had 12 years of education where English was the medium of instruction were always willing to work anytime & anywhere, they were routinely rejected if I scheduled them for work. Reason given by management - they don't look like they can speak English.

I had to wonder reading this ad. Who wants the blond-haired blue-eyed teacher anyway, Yuji or Jocelyn?

I know Japanese female teachers of English request the "Heidi from the hills of Austria" look just as often as the men do (despite the fact that Heidi speaks only a rural dialect of German).

The Filipinas and Indian teachers of English spoke fluent, educated English with American or British accents, often had master's degrees in education or ESL, and were dedicated workers who never complained. Yet, when not outright rejected before being sent to a job, they were subject to many more post-event complaints than the wild party kids with the desired phenotype(lacking visas, training or any sort of education or work ethic) ever got.

A man who used to work at the head office of Winbe told me that he heard a franchise owner request they send a female teacher with big tits(as opposed to a male teacher with big tits?). Apparently the head office does or did the recruiting for its franchises.

I've had English-teaching jobs being thrown at me since I got here. my credentials? Blode hair and green eyes. That's it. And my hair's not even really blonde.

I don't really have time for a job right now-- I came to play, not work. But part of me wants to accept a job teaching beginner's English and teach them that it's customary to slap a waitress on the ass and say "Get my sandwich bitch" when ordering food in a restaurant.

Hooray for racism.

This is totally normal, of course. You guys realize that English classes, especially for little kids or business people, aren't really about learning to speak English. They are simply for getting used to being around and speaking to scary Whitey. Thus indo-jin and firipino-jin need not apply.
