Luckily, the Japanese government doesn't accept dimes. Yen only, so your friend is safe.

Seriously though, go and tell your friend the same thing that you told us here and listen to his reply. It will be worth your while.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

About your tax dodging mate?

Why dya have to warn him when he knows damn well what he's doing and if it hasnt bothered him for four years he's likely to go on doing it for as long as he can.

It's one thing to help mates with advice when it's something they honestly don't know and need pointing out but hey - the guy's a permanent resident, he knows the system, he knows just cos he's in Japan it aint making tax dodging legitimate, he's got it all figured out in his own mind. Let him make his own decisions and face up to the consequences.

To tell you the truth, if a mate of mine was doing the same I'd realise that people like me who pay every fucking yen they have to are actually subsidising the tax dodgers so I don't owe him anything in the way of warning him about what he knows he's doing.

As for the link - what's this foreign exchange investment shit? I want in! Can somebody tell me what this kind of investing involves and how to do it? And yep, I will pay taxes on it and declare my earnings - I just wanna know how I get into it.

Look, if all the English teacher that worked under the counter were hauled in, there would be about 100 of us left in the country.

The most important is does he leave a paper trail? If he is getting paid cash on the barrel it is likely the tax authorities are going to have a merry time trying to catch up with him. If his name is sign onto document there is a chance they might go after him but it really depends on how much he is making a year. The cost of investigating tax evasion means the nickel and dime evasion is likely to go unpunished.

Are you sure he's evading taxes and not legally avoiding them? There are legal ways to pay little or no taxes.

Relax, crucifixion hasn't been used as a punishment in Japan since the time of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Modern Japan finds that hanging is more effective.

If your friend is an indendent consultant then he must have incorporated. If he did that, he's probably set his business up so it always makes a loss. That way he doesn't have to pay taxes.
