UK SOLICITORS IN JAPAN

Postby thumper » Fri Mar 19, 2010 1:38 pm

Hi Everyone.

I'm in a very protracted and sordid dispute with a London NHS Trust hospital. It concerns the surgery they performed on our daughter. The dispute centers on them overbilling (double their written quote) and negligence (daughter contracted a bad infection post-op). A ton of money is involved.

I found the following firms on the Law Society website with Tokyo branches:

HERBERT SMITH LLP, CLIFFORD CHANCE (TOKYO) LLP, LOVELLS HORITSU JIMUSHO GAIKOKUHO KYODO JIGYO, WHITE & CASE, DLA PIPER TOKYO PARTNERSHIP,
MORRISON & FOERSTER LLP, LAW OFFICE OF T. MARK HALPERN.

Have any of used them or have any useful recommendations, please? I am especially looking for a firm of aggressive and skilled solicitors that won't bankrupt me - if there are any.

TX

Not sure about the last one but the other ones are top-tier firms where you'll easily pay $700/HR. for a partner's time if not more.

I don't think you should try to engage a UK solicitor in Japan. As, gkanai says, you'll just be paying through the nose just for the dubious benefit of having someone in the same time zone. Instead, just employ a firm in the UK. You'll also be able to select from individuals with experience of handling your kind of case.

of the above, MoFo and White and Case are going to hurt your wallet the most, but are the most reputable and multifunctional.

I dont want to give any feed back about the rest as I haven't had any experiance with them.

The firm I work for uses White and Case, I had met many of their lawyers as well casually.

Call each of them up and talk on the phone and make sure you are not being billed for phone time.

Alas, is there any other kind of dispute with a NHS Trust hospital? Best of luck.
