didn't know that a high fat intake is associated with this.....with Wikipedia, we are all doctors, engineers, and physicists.

Dunno about that...followed the link to the abstract.
Age-Related Eye Disease Study participants aged 60 to 80 years at enrollment (N = 4519) provided estimates of habitual nutrient intake through a self-administered semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire.

Food questionnaires are notorious for being very difficult to mine accurate data from. Besides asking people to recall what they ate from anywhere to a week to a year previous, they usually lump things like steak and frozen lasagna in the same category, and butter and margarine into the same category. So we get natural and highly processed foods in the same category, we get foods containing mainly protein and fat lumped together with foods very high in carbs, we get animal fats grouped with vegetable oils. It's very difficult to tease any meaningful information from such a design.

These sorts of qualitative studies are not designed to prove anything, they are supposed to be used to find associations that can help researchers design quantitative studies that are the gold-standard in evidence-based medicine. Too often these days, the researchers and the press collude to trumpet these very preliminary findings as new and major breakthroughs, rather than follow through and do real research into the nature of the associations.

But...but...but I read it on the Internet, so it MUST be true!
