back home in the good old states we could get a notary stamp on a copy for like $15... my wife heard 1 man yen from probably the first place she checked... is that about it here? any other options for a fucking stamped official copy of something (passport)

that's the norm for a notorial certificate here, if not a little cheaper than what i've had to pay out here in the sticks. depending on the type of documentation though, if you're near a consulate or embassy, they may be able to provide notorial services with an appointment.

Notorial services for foreign documents can be expensive. You have a few options:

1. Pay up

2. See if they will copy the two documents onto one sheet for the price of one copy (that's what my local offered).

3. Try your embassy, the Australian embassy (I'm an Ozi) photocopied mine for 2300 yen a piece.

When we had to do this we found the city to be the cheapest and easiest. There was one city office in Kobe downtown and I believe we paid about \5000. No idea if they do this in the smaller cities though if you live there.

typical TIJ though where anything semi official, licensed or that studied pastry making in Paris is entitled to charge you up the ass

Oh no problems then if you live in Tokyo I would think. Have your wife check the gov't websites I suppose. This was one of those "Honey I'm busy, and it would take me forever to hunt this down in Japanese anyway, so you do it please." deals so I can't offer much more than that. Good luck.
