Japanese 'REFORM'

Postby Taro Toporific » Sun Jan 19, 2014 2:41 pm

:?:
I walk by a couple of "REFORM" signs everyday and wonder howtheflyingfuck did the Japanese decide how リフォーム, rifōmu should mean in Japanese to remodel, renovation (as in a building) or to alter clothing.

Do any of you know of a native dialect of English that uses "reform" to mean to 'remodel'? :???:

The only reform Japan needs is a government reform. They need to tear down these ant farm cities and redo the whole lot.

Not the worst abuse of language I've seen here, reminds me though of one I saw called City Reform. Of course the katakana version was quite amusing..... シティリフォーム

Reform, restoration, reshaping, renovation...

Some clown searched a basic dictionary then tried to be creative by using a synonym...

Annoying as hell but not as criminal as what they usually do to any language, theirs or foreign...

I'm pretty sure it's made-in-Japan English (和製英語).

リフォーム <-- Weblio dictionary entry
文法情報(名詞、サ変名詞)
対訳 renovation (e.g. a house); redecoration; makeover; updating (※「reform」は和製英語)

リフォーム -reform- <-- This wasei-eigo page has lots of examples for Japanese learning English
正しい英語は…alteration,refurbish,renovate

I was always under the impression this came from 和製英語 "リホーム", aka "rehome", and somehow got confused and corrected to "リフォーム". If you can beat Google's "we know what you mean better than you" filter there are even companies using that variant.

At least having a "smart figure" did exist in English in the past.

Anyway, the whole reason I brought the topic up was because I walk by this sign by everyday near my home.

Like at....Gorilla?

I'm more confused at the shitboxes they think are worth putting any money towards "reform." I know it's a permit issue at times but it's like putting a dress and makeup on a horse...it's still a fucking horse.

Before/After had a two-hour special on the other night, that was filmed in Paris. That was a cool reform.

As much as I love that show, sometimes it has me on the floor with their antics.

Serious case of ADD on this episode...

The boatpeople part was more interesting... Even if i don't think they spoke aboot the little troubles associated...
-you need friends... To obtain the anchoring rights...
-the safety is more than inadequate... You need a 24h ASS* like a german shepherd if you don't want your stuff to be stolen daily.
-the river Seine is known to be growing in winter (referenced by the level of water drowning the statue of the "Zouave du pont de l'Alma") if this case you need to have Seal Team 6 support to go buy your bread...

As for the apartment part... The father's way of talking was of, like waaaayyyy of either awfully scripted or he was replaced by a body snatcher... Restoration work was just the standard stuff for old appartement... Right side of the Seine sucks... No elevator... No parking place... Wait and see if it gets better...
