Dat is what I mean. Sure, occasionally one ends up stopping without a change to change down, but seems every time I get stuck behind a road cyclist at lights they power away with all the acceleration of an obachan on a mamachari.

I don't get it either. I always try to gear down for my own sake not because I give a fuck about being in the way of motorists.

BTW I'm talking from the viewpoint of being another cyclist. Fucking annoying because quite often there's no space to pass until they've crawled up to speed anyway.

I think it mostly happens because people are always trying to race to beat the red light and then stopping at the last second.

In which case, why not wobble away carefully and switch down as soon as practical? It's what I do, in my weird western fashion.

Either that, or some jitensha-sensei once said you should avoid changing gears because it ruins your bike or something, and it's now the gospel truth from which never shall be wavered.

Or, contrariwise, there was never an clear instruction given to change down through the gears when you approach a stop. Therefore, you don't do it, because that kind of off piste experimentation is not safe no matter that it meets needs.

My daughter steadfastly refuses to change gear, ever, on her bike as it is just too much trouble and too complicated. The bike stays in 2nd (of 3) up hill and down dale. She is pretty strong so that's the way it stays in spite of my entreaties.

Tip to trump all other tips:

tell her it will make her legs fat if she doesn't change gears, but good use of gears will tone the muscle and give long slim legs

I have a theory that the refusal to change gear is representative of the salaryman approach to work.It is totally inefficient but avoids the mendokusai job of making a decision - and you are exerting yourself mightily so you are trying hard and therefore a worthy member of society

That is deliciously evil, and would probably work, sadly enough.

Very well put. In my observation, if you can ding 2 of the 3 Modern Virtues (Taihen, Mendoukusai, and Benri) and add a touch of Ganbaru or even a dash of Tsukusu then the self-satisfaction buzzers will ring loud and clear, thereby obviating the need for any rational thought, planning, or efficiency.

Ever notice how agitated good Organisation Men get in the face of repeated appeals for greater efficiency and planning?

Far far more cunning than anything I could muster but unfortunately she is an unbearable little swot. Too damn clever for her own good - she won't believe it and even if she did, she wouldn't give it sufficient weight to act on it.

Kids eh?

Genius! Yes, of course. And confirm that by saying that's exactly what I do as well.
