So it's THAT easy to become a Jp

Postby wangta » Fri May 13, 2016 4:17 pm

citizen? Was talking to a bloke who knows somebody who's going to apply for citizenship in the near future. The bloke has good Japanese language skills and just about nothing else going for him I would have thought.

He hasn't done anything special, has lived in Japan for around 5 yrs, doing the usual teaching gigs, hasn't ever paid the pension although pays national health, is not an oldie, aint married or engaged to a native Japanese. According to this bloke it's 'easier to get citizenship than PR'. Supposedly.

What do fucked gaijin esp the few of you who are probably citizens or have PR think? This bloke sounds delusional to me.

From what I've heard from the few naturalized people I know, he's right. Though I've also been told that recently PR visa are much easier to get than before.

The naturalisation application process is said to be more straightforward with less onerous hoops to jump through, though it is more time consuming and detailed. From the sounds of it the applicant heard it from that ultimate authority: "a guy down at the pub said........" After only 5 years without a tangible attachment to Japan (i.e. beringed pussy) he will probably get politely refused. Do let us know if you hear anything else.

I get a whiff of Akihabara/Anime. Could it be he is just one of those witless 20dumbthings that thinks because his country accepts immigrants that Japan does too? The newer crew is special stupid in very important ways, after all, even when they're nice kids, and their innocuous ethnocentricity is off the charts. The new JET recruits must be drooling simpletons.

It's hard to believe anything is easier than PR (In the world of immigration that is), at least as far as the application process is concerned. The form is refreshingly simple - two sides of A4 from memory, or maybe even one. The list of documents was similarly brief.

And then just a matter of waiting. In my case about 5 months. Refusals do happen - especially for people that can't show they have paid tax and the like. I would assume the same is true for citizenship. You'd better have all your ducks in a row but compared to other countries it's pretty easily done.

That "Olden Guy" from GP et al that naturalised said that the list of supporting documents for naturalisation was extensive, if memory serves; moreso than with PR. Other than that, like you said: Japanese Immigration procedures are a breeze compared to heavily bureaucratic countries like Canada. The real problem is that might allow too many Akihabara types to sneak in under the wire and ruin it. Let's hope they cull applicants based on spelling and grammar

Though some say it's easier to get citizenship than PR that really depends on what you mean by easy. For one thing you have to write an essay yourself by hand in Japanese and complete an interview in Japanese for naturalization so depending on your language skills it could be a lot harder to get than PR which doesn't require either (no interview, essay can be typed, and it's OK if it's in another language as long as you include a translation). Like kuro said the citizenship application is more detailed and time consuming but supposedly the criteria are clearer. Either way, just because it's easier doesn't mean he'll get it. If what you described is true, he's unlikely to get to unless maybe he's got a big fat trust fund or something like that.

I also found the PR process very simple and got it in 4 months with no problem after living here for 10 years straight.

I'm sure I didn't even have to write an essay much less get it translated to get PR. I think there was one box that addressed the question of why and I just wrote "to be with family" or something similar.

If you're married to or a dependent of a Japanese national, the essay isn't required.

Ah, I see.

I wasn't married when I got PR, and I had to write a short paragraph explaining why I wanted the priviledge, no translation necessary.
