TIJ, the doctor's job is to keep you just about fit for work, not to increase your life quality and clearly not to heal you. You have pain, you need more gamman, not pills

Actually - I believe that myself and only take pills after very careful consideration and research. The strongest pain killer I have ever taken is aspirin, and beer, and wine....

Agreed, and I applaud you for that. I have never suffered from incurable chronic pain but I do what I can to do the same. But that still doesn't make it less weird for how accurate GG's take on Japanese medical care was. I think its a species wide trait but the sheer number of Japanese people that use the pain of others to reaffirm their own lofty principles is F'in weird man, and physicians doing it is rather obscene. Dood. That obsessive fear of reliance or addiction is almost as weird as reliance or addiction. But I have also always stuck with aspirin, beer and that which shall be smoked but not named. And no, you can't smoke Hillbilly Heroin...........or can you!!??

So, BOT: if she has no presciption she will be Hamped. If she does, she will be wrist slapped and sent on her way, followed by a brief doghouse stay and repatriation.

Japanese law enforcement has never even attempted to arrest officials at Tokyo Electric Power Company for negligent oversight of nuclear reactors at Fukushima, or managers at Takata for selling the company's faulty airbags.

I thought that was a bridge too far myself. I don't disagree, but it's a very faulty comparison that reminded me of Debito Logik: she was arrested as a private citizen that happens to be quite public for breaking the narcotics control act by pursuing an illegal method of procuring restricted drugs. What those other douchebags did was corporate and managerial negligence, which is a far harder nut to crack legally, as shown by the shocking lack of criminal prosecutions over the 2008 financial crisis that was largely engineered in a large financial centre not very far from where the writer of that blog probably lives

So, nice sentiment, shame about the logic. Like I said, he makes a great case regarding potemtial repecussions but he sounds like a pissy Americvnt debate club president when he falls into the But Teacher!!!! stuff.

The powerful painkiller oxycodone is a relatively common prescription drug in the U.S.,

One which is of concern to the US DEA, apparently.

The Yomiuri Shimbun

Arrested U.S. Toyota exec asked father to mail painkiller to Japan
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- An American executive at Toyota Motor Corp. suspected of illegally importing a painkiller considered a narcotic in Japan has told police she asked her father to make the shipment, an investigative source said Thursday.
Tokyo police are considering sending officers to the United States to verify the statement by Julie Hamp, 55, and other aspects of their investigation.
Hamp has denied the allegation, telling investigators that the painkiller oxycodone was intended to alleviate knee pain.

I guess the whole point is that if it is indeed prescription, despite the legality of importing it like she did, it would be reasonable to expect some leniency in handling the situation. (Like confiscation and noting that if she got caught doing it again, she'd be arrested...rather than SOP - lock her up for 3 weeks without charges, while doing the "raid/investigation" dance and letting the media know) Even if she is an addicted druggie herself, unless they found evidence she was planning on selling the stuff, it's overkill to lock her up as if she was some threat to people around her.

What garbage that article is. And, I don't accept the Debito comparison - that's not fair.

But it's safe to say the police wouldn't even have told the media if a male Japanese Toyota executive were allegedly involved in similar lawbreaking.

No, it's not safe to say that at all.

And what is it about Bloomberg? They also publish that Irish so called economist idiot's articles about Japan -

It's all a cunning trick to keep policy-makers benign to Japan's business interests. Actually the Japanese economy is going from strength to strength. Look at the lobby of my hotel - everyone looks immaculate and all the cars pulling up outside are expensive models. Japanese cellphone manufacturers lead the world producing ever more advanced models with more and more features as yet undreamt of outside Japan. And so on.

If the dad is who really sent them, not much Japan can do about him but haven't there already been cases where people who were sent pot were charged as if they sent them themselves? Still no confirmation on if she had a prescription or not?

Suspicion grows over Toyota exec's motive for alleged illegal painkiller import
mainichi.jp/english - 毎日新聞 June 25, 2015 (Thu.)
Continues with more nails in her coffin ...
...
the tablets were shipped by international air parcel delivery service.
The customs label on the package sent to Hamp declared the contents to be a "necklace." A necklace and a pendant were in the package, but they were like toys. The 57 tablets found in the box were placed beneath a plastic sheet at the bottom of the box as well as in a plastic case and a paper bag. The pendant was in the plastic case with 13 tablets being placed beneath it, but cardboard was tucked between the pendant and the tablets. Such being the case, the MPD suspect that Hamp had the tablets concealed by pretending that the necklace and pendant were being sent.

Right, that looks like an amateur drug smuggling attempt....but if the pills were illegally obtained in the US as well, she's on the wrong side of the law in both countries.

That her dad sent it to her is far worse – since it confirms collusion, conspiracy, and a just an `ol in your face Fuck the Japanese and their laws type of attitude.

Of course the investigators will go to interview dad – but if he is smart he will be duck hunting in Alaska, or fishing in Maine, or practicing being a drug runner in Indonesia. Anyway, they get to check the box and ride an aeroplane – a big deal for junior investigators. But if they do interview him, watch out – no telling what he will say, or they will hear, and where the investigation will lead next.

IMO, they can skip all of the proceedings and just lock her up. Learning how to march – everywhere, and nowhere – will do her good, and her knees too. Plus – a big bonus, she will no longer be addicted. Then, in a few years’ time, she can go join drug runner daddy and try the next fad drug.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling dad will want to "help" by being honest and open with the J-police...not realizing their sole purpose is to gather any and all evidence to convict her.

And.... William Pesek is one sick puppy. Let`s see how long it takes for Bloomberg to be raided.... OK, I know - that won`t happen, but surely Bloomberg should fire him for incompetence, promoting illegal activity, and sheer stupidity. Break the law and get caught – then pay the consequences and don`t whine about it. It is unbecoming.
