Sending Money to/from Australia

Postby spyder » Sat Dec 10, 2005 11:34 pm

Hello all. I have just opened a new bank account with SMBC. I was wondering if it is easy enough to transfer money into my Australian bank account. As the aussies reading this would know, we use a Name, Account Number, and BSB 'formula' for out accounts. As Japanese don't have BSB numbers, I was wondering if there is anything I should look out for. I don't wanna go transfering a bunch of money and have it disappear on me :)

Thanks for your help!

Gomi, where's your comment here. Taro told me you were laundrying all that money you were making mugging drunks in Shibuya with a bank in Alice Springs. Help the guy out!

I think a site like this will bring more "real life situations" that google will, hence why I asked here. Cheers for the link though, I will check it out.

That was real life.

http://www.golloyds.com is the answer to your question. Well, unless you want to spend 45 minutes at SMBC filling out forms, watching the staff run around and get hankos on them, and then paying two or three times the transfer fees... Repeat every time you want to send money. Or you can use Lloyds. Seems a no-brainer to me.

Thanks a bunch guys :)

The next questions is how can I print the PDF. I don't have a printer here, and not really sure if any of my mates do either. I know you can print stuff at Convini's, but PDF's....?

It was shinjuku, not shibuya!!

Anyway - second the LLoyds scenario. It is easy and quick and relatively cheap for personal banking. If you are moving lots of yens then there are other solutions but if you had lots of yens you would be asking the question here.

In terms of printing a PDF - internet cafe's are your friend my friend. PDF's are really standard.

Alternatively, try Kinko's.

Gomi-out....

p.s. Buy a printer!!

Another Bank Question

Postby spyder » Fri Jan 06, 2006 2:53 am

Hello again all, thanks for the info. re: sending money to Australia. I have another question though. I am sure there are other members on here who are with SMBC. I want to know where on my bank book to find the appropriate details needed for someone in Australia to send ME money. As Gomi, and other Aussies will know, we use BSB numbers (Branch Numbers - not sure if the US etc. has this too), but ofcourse the Japanese don't. What sort of information will I need to give the person to enable them to send me money. I am asking here to try and avoid the headfucks of Japanese banks :)

Cheers.

hello,

not sure who smbc is but you may, unfortunately you may have to go in to ask for the info.

my experience with my bank, here in shimane was this -

they gave me the romanized version of their bank info and something called a SWIFT code.

wire transfer was made (in this case from the u.s.)

upon receiving it, they called me and i had to go in and fill in paperwork and they had the (as i see it) audacity to ask what the money was for.

after this, it was cleared with their head office and took another three days to be transferred to my account.

rather a pita and super-anal for something that shouldn't be. i have accounts in canada and generally don't bother receiving money here any more if i can help it. money wired to my accounts in canada gets transferred right away and i sure as hell don't have to make time to go in and fill out forms.

a few other options?

- you also might want to look into having a postal money order sent if it's not urgent. never done this. would be interested to hear how others have made out.
- electronic postal transfer if australia has postal giro accounts like japan and england
- direct withdrawal. you can make withdrawals from a foreign account directly using a postal atm (they are on the cirrus-plus network). my mother did this when she was here and had no problems, even has english. not sure what the withdrawal limits and service charges are..

hope this helps..

This is done because customs and tax people require it of banking facilities. That is not really the bank's fault, however, there is a maximum amount you can receive without having to verify usage (no, I don't remember how much), but I found my local banker pretty reasonable. He would simply call me and ask me what to but on the form and I would tell him something like soapland expenses or pink salon table charges and he would always right down seikatsuhi.

Yes they use BSB numbers all over the world. It is a standard 6 digit code (I think). Look at your bankbook here in Japan and it gives you your account number as well as the branch name and 3 digit code for the branch. (there are other numbers but these are to identify the bank globally). Or better yet, ask the bank to provide you with the code.

So in order to send money from Australia, try to also get the swift code of your branch. That may help. But better yet - ask your branch.
