Working Out at Night

Postby sublight » Wed May 23, 2007 3:37 pm

I'm turning into a fat FG and would like to do something about it. I currently bike to work (20-35km round trip depending on the route), but I'd really like to be able to do some lifting to balance out the legwork and aerobic exercise of the riding (and just generally feel better). The problem is that I'm stuck at the office until 10 or 11 almost every single night and most gyms (including the ones right in front of my office and home) are closed by then.

I used to be a member at Gold's in Harajuku (and liked it a lot), but I'm now living and working on the east side of Tokyo so that's pretty far out of the way. Does anyone know of any late-night gyms (like until 2 or 3am) anywhere between Chuo-ku and Adachi-ku?

Pool, studios, treadmills and bikes aren't necessary, I'm mostly interested in lifting. Machines are great, but free weights are ok too. I thought there might be plenty of little hole-in-the-wall places in Sumida-ku or Taito-ku, but I don't see anything on-line.

I may end up either deciding that Harajuku isn't all that far away, or just getting some dumbbells to lift at home.

Although I don't necessarily want to discourage you from exercise, there's some articles floating around that suggest the what you eat is far more important to maintaining the correct Body Mass Index than exercise.

Oh I'm also attacking that end of the equation as well. More vegetables and fruits, fewer snack foods and beers, water and tea instead of sugary juices, colas and frappacinos, and trusting my brain over my stomach when I'm buying food (I don't need to order the omori size for everything, I don't need the extra onigiri, and I'm not going to die of starvation between meals). I'm at 86kg, down from 89 a couple of months ago, which at 185cm puts my BMI at 25.1. Overweight, but not terribly so.

My only weakness is the Indian curry buffet near my office:drool:, but I limit myself to only once a week.

Mostly, I want to hit the gym again because it was fun when I was doing it, and my wife and I both liked when I had muscles.

From personal experience, it is best to find the gym located near your station or your house so you can go workout on the weekends as well. I go to Gold's and the service is excellent. The personnels actually spot you when you lift unlike most other places that just scratch their ball sacks and socialize. Gold's is also one of the very few gyms that are open 24 hours as well.

You are correct, Kuro. I also heard from a personal trainer that it's 60% nutrition and 40% lifestyle (ie how much you excercise).

Actually, the more effective way of keeping fit and burning body fat is to work out in the morning when your testosterone level is still high. The only problem i is finding the time in the morning to work out.

The wife put me on a rabbit-like heavy vegetable diet and I lost the love handles in about 6 months.
Beer is the killer though. If you are serious about losing weight you will have to cut back, or risk being ex-communicated and quit altogether.:(

Japanese Men Battle Bulging Waistlines With Cell Phone Cameras

The obesity epidemic has spread to once slim and trim Japanese men who are using cutting edge technology to battle the bulge. Japanese men have turned to cell phone cameras to help them lose weight by keeping track of how many calories they eat.

The scheme is simple. Instead of using a paper and pencil to record what they eat in a day, then look up the calories of that food and add them all up the men just pull out their cell phones and snap a photo of what they are about to stuff in their mouths.

The program is only available on a test basis for now and men have to wait three days to get a tally of what they consumed. But health officials think the program will help.

The trial program has been run for two years by public health insurance offices in the Osaka region in western Japan. They signed up 100 heart patients the first year. The second year they signed up patients who had diabetes or who were clinically obese.

Patients e-mail their photos in and get an analysis of what they ate back, along with recommendations from a dietician. The service costs $21 a month after a $37 joiner's fee.
