Where to buy Imodium in Tokyo?

Postby baka tono » Mon Apr 21, 2008 10:18 pm

It`s not urgent 8O just thought it would be nice to have in my carry on for my upcoming trip. I ordered from FBC but the order wont arrive in time. I also phoned the American Pharmacy but they dont have it, so anyone know where I can buy some Imodium in Tokyo?

[url=http://homepage2.nifty.com/treknz/diarrhea_dehydration.html]日]はロペミンという名前で製品化されているが、医師の処方箋が必要な薬剤になっている。 ロペミン/ROPEMIN is the name of Imodium sold in Japan but it requires a doctor's prescription.

I have some experience with this (ahem) "issue" due to a recent medical condition (I had my gall bladder removed). My surgeon recommends against Immodium and says Kaopectate works more gently and effectively. The active ingredient in Kaopectate is kaolin, a highly refined clay. It's about as natural as you can get. You could actually make your own Kaopectate by digging up your own clay and mixing it in a blender (if you could find the right type of clay and sterilize it by baking it).
Anyway, the active ingredient (kaolin) is considered biologically inert so it doesn't even appear on the label. So I suspect it's unlikely to be a prescription med in Japan, like Immodium.

There are some alternatives available over the counter. I recently had a nasty case of food poisoning and found the following worked great:

エクトール for Diarrhoea and Abdominal Pain
Seirogan - Creasote Pills - these smell foul but work for food and water poisoning.

My wife occasionally takes that crap. It smells like tar and is apparently considered to be a carcinogenic in several countries...

My resident rice cooker has forced that down my gullet on occasion and it has all the quaint taste of fresh asphalt mixed with tar. I was forced to drink bourbon chasers to get it down, but that was no biggie, since I even do that with corn flakes.

My wife has tried to get me to take it and some other witch doctor remedies, but I generally refuse.

I've never been a fan of taking any kind of medicine for sniffles, stomach discomfort, minor pain and such. Especially not medicine that smells so bad it needs to be kept in a sealed lead box.

Only exception is for dentistry, because they're a bunch of goddamn mask wearing, totem dancing, barbarian witch doctor quacks no matter country you're in.

I've broken bones and not taken any sort of pain medication, but the goddamn dentist...

Most recent visit I had to have work done on a chipped tooth, which I somehow managed to chip at and under the gum line (I think my wife took a frying pan to me when I was asleep or something, I dunno) and the bloody dentist I went to used those new "needleless" anaesthetic things, which frankly I don't understand, because the "needleless" things hurt too (it's like getting shot in the mouth with a little pneumatic nail gun) and then they follow that up immediately with the regular old stabby stab anyway...

Speak for yourself. I have 3 dentists, a periodontist, an endodontist, and a regular dentist. They're all professors at the local dental school, which is consistently rated #1 in the world.
That may seem like a lot of dentistry, but now I have really good teeth. I made sure I fixed every possible problem before I went over to Japan, because I didn't want to have any dental problems while overseas and get stuck with their primitive dentistry. I mentioned this to my dentist, he said, "don't be ridiculous, most of our best equipment comes from Japan." I said that might be so, the Japanese may make the best equipment, but the best dentists don't come from Japan.

Charles, my teeth are well cared for here in Japan. If you don't believe me, I'll send 'em over to you, so you can check 'em out...
