Geology...

Postby Coligny » Thu Jun 18, 2009 2:39 pm

I know, i'm not suppose to ask serious question or expect real answers here...

But yesterday my parking (around 6 regular cars places) seems to have moved 3 cm forward. I used nylon black and yellow cord to delimit some places and one of them (in V configuration) got extended and the point of the V anchor screw has been ripped from the ground leaving a visible upward dent in the tarmac. The screw stayed on the rope and now holding it perpendicular to the ground the hole is 3 to 4 cm too far to be reached, I will need to drill again to place it back. Also the concrete step in front of the lobby entrance seems to have a wider gap than before -but for this I don't really have concrete evidence.

To whom am I supposed to report these kind of -behaviour- ? The city hall seems to be a throwback from the soviet union where you spent your life trying to get to the proper desk. The quake safety bulletin seems to be from the fire dept. But it's really the last place where I want to make people lose their time.

The last quake was few month ago. Scared the babycat shitless. haven't manage to clean all the stains yet... Nothing exceptionnal since. Just a little hot these days. But extension of 4 cm out of 3-4 meter total is a lot for basic thermal expansion...

Where are we talking about? Is this your own house, a mansion, a rented apartment, or your office, rented, or owned?

Actually, pictures might be helpful although difficult....

If it is any type of a rental you may have some redress through the landlord, or his insurance. If it is yours, it may depend on insurance, or the type of domain. i.e. if it is kouyu public and private, it could be the city's responsibility, if private, yours and your insurance.

Still without knowing more, it's difficult to say....

It's not about money or insurance. It's really about warning people in charge that there maybe is something going on.

Central Toyohashi*, 10 minutes by foot from the train station. It's mah (-father in law-) building, 3 levels plus a roof kiosk (boiler/laundry), around 10 rooms of 8 tatamis per level. There is no -real- damage to speak of (except for my nylon cord and few cracks on the ground). The building is 30years old way too big for what we do inside now (father is retired, so it's now really just a big house for 5 people 2 cats and an insane amount of jumping spiders, but the whole city is peacefully overrun by these 8 legged clowns). We didn't move to the real house because she need complete refreshing inside and it's just too much hassle to care about it now. The building is leaky because of sun-burnt joint on the roof but aside from this extremly sound, no major cracks in the walls or broken windows because of shifts in the frame. Architect is from the family, construction company was clean so no worry here, building is nothing fancy, just a (from the top) L shaped big block of concrete.

Just mah parking that's running away (and few sinkholes in the street that have to be re-filled every 6 month or so)

* yeah I know as glamour a Central Bumfark Alabama...
