Don't dare me...I've got that down to a science. I could probably scribble a decision tree that guaranteed success for even the likes of McJoto

My skills have been near perfect this past year...to the point where I'm actually wanting some challenges. In Mcoto's particular case, i'd probably have to resort to a mute that just couldn't say no. :D

Re: Credit Cards - If you can't beat em, join em?

Postby matsuki » Wed Nov 02, 2016 11:37 pm

So recently I cancelled my older card, only to get hit with a bullshit renewal fee of near 35,000 after the fact. I called, they apologized and said they would refund the charge...which they did. Now the card was closed and paid off...and my new card pulls from another bank account on payment day so I moved all my funds over to there. A month later and I'm getting calls, telling me I'm late making a payment on the closed card. WTF?

Apparently, whoever inputted the refund marked it as a debit on the card ledger. (basically they charged me 35,000 a second time while refunding 35,000 to my bank account) It took nearly half an hour on the phone with their rep before they understood that while the memo indeed said refund, it was not marked as a credit but a debit. They "investigated" it for 3 days, forgot to call me back, and then needed an hour to be reminded of how they fucked up. Instead of just closing out the account, they insisted they have to wire me back the funds for the past two months and then pay the balance later this month. Talk about a fucking headache...but goes to show you need to keep an eye on any cards you decide to close for this shit. Getting hit twice for the same bullshit fee is really sketch.

The only positive from the whole experience is I heard from their reps that late payments within 30 days do not go on your credit record here as a late payment or otherwise. (wanted to make sure my credit didn't get pooped on for their mistake) Something I had always assumed since that's how it seems to work in most other countries...except when a friend asked me earlier this year, I googled it and there is a ton of bullshit online in Japanese claiming even a day late will ruin your credit.

So, this is a long winded way of telling us that Japanese banks are now in the American 1995-2005 era?

EDIT: don't you own land? If you do, doesn't your bank know? Showing those beige papers covered in kanji and stamps usually end in "sumimasen, gomen....bla blah...." and problems get magically fixed.

Basically, yes.

Yeah, but no issues getting new cards and such once you've already established a decent credit history here.
