Importing plants?

Postby matsuki » Fri Sep 23, 2011 9:17 pm

Does anyone know how difficult it is to import a small potted plant to Japan? (from the U.S. or U.K.) Without going into the details, the plant is not available in Japan at the moment and seeds are not available, leaving the plant itself as the only option. I've seen all kinds of stuff sent via regular post arrive under the radar and I'm only talking one plant but just wondering how strict they are with things like this.

Could you go into the details? Curious myself about the same type of thing.

LOL, I realized how that might come across after I posted it :D

But alas, I'm talking about these crackberry plants:

Because it's a hybrid, you need to start with the plant, seeds from it won't yield the same berries. (though mutant berries might be Japan's new claim to fame)

My new place has 2 balconies so I somehow got the idea to try my hand and growing some fruits/veggies....a bit more useful than all the crazy cat ladies this cuntry seems to have growing jungles all around their houses.

I smuggle plants all the time from the US. Last spring it was various kinds of blue seed potatoes (primitive Inca varieties) and a small shrubbery (Hawthorn) that looks nice and was not too expensive.

I just put plants for my Rice Ranch my in my suitcase and say I have, "nothing to fucking declare." In the past 25+ years, the Japanese customs officiers have never checked. If I were to bring in "seed" needing more security, I would not be so blasé]2xvvvJ7hvo8[/yt]

I came with some leaves from a plant belonging to my grandpa (both dead now btw)... Only to discover that the exact same plant was growing wild everywhere in Aichi. In fact I have pict of me in the garden of my great grandma in Verdun and the stuff growing there is exactly the same as the stuff growing here in the parking for decades, it's like a bad video game where the praphist were too lazy to draw different landscape...

But i digress... The leaf came in a test tube lying on a bottom of agar-agar jelly... Only the bio-hazard sticker was missing to the picture... Custom officer saw and put it back in my bag... they don't seems to care much... I wouldn't try that in australia...

I don't think plants are a problem. Custom is looking for animal products, mostly beef and pork. Fish products seem to be good. On my way to Canada once I brought white peaches and grapes from Japan with me and declared it at entry, they said no problem. But they ask if I had any meat product. I assume it would be similar in Japan, although in over 50 entries in Japan, no one has ever opened my suitcase to check.

Hmmm, I guess it can't hurt to try and plead ignorance (by mail)

Too bad I don't have enough room on the balcony for corn!

Nothing earth shattering... Just that cat's are attracted to corm to the point where a tuna corm salad have nearly no chance to fully end up in your stomach if you live in a cathouse...

If I'm living in a cathouse, I'm more concerned with where that tuna corn salad came from than where it's going.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

LOL, only 31 and still have plenty of youngin' lemurs frequenting my place ;) If it ws Greji's influence, I would be wishing for a beer garden! I guess I just enjoy fresh berries more than most. You reminded me of one good point to the balcony garden...no kitties to p00p/pee/dig at my 3 minutes of hard work planting them! :D
