Companies don't have as much work to do, so there are more pros getting what little their is. I have a friend at an agency that used to BEG me to translate documents back in 2007 and the first half of 2008. I had zero official experience but she knows my level, and I had JLPT-1 which was good enough for her. Now, she ain't got shit for me, and I've asked a few times.

When I was younger and naiver I had dreams of becoming a translator-cum-writer, maybe making my name as an "Asia Journalist", that kind of thing, for better or worse I drifted into IT (well, was kind of dragged into it by dint of understanding what the people who pay the bills actually want/need, which is something a lot of IT "professionals" fail to grasp, but that's another story), which is not without its problems.
But there goes the backup plan, which was "translating or if that fails, English teaching"; I guess I'll have to replace it with "strange foreigner standing behind the counter at the Lawson 100".
BTW the friend (actually more of an acquaintance) never got back to me with any more details.
