.jp domain

Postby gaijinpunch » Mon Apr 07, 2014 1:13 pm

Howdy

A friend in the US needs a .jp domain. I will act as the middle man, but am wondering what to expect. Usually I just got through the elephant hunter site (GoDaddy) which is somewhat painless. Anything wonky on the Japanese side? Is there a preferred domain dealer? What about the payments? Ideally they'd take a US credit card as I won't live here forever.

Avoid GoDaddy for anything as they are slimeballs.

One of my previous employers has been using this company for many years without issue: http://www.jp-domains.com/

We can assist you with the local presense required to register a .JP, .NE.JP or .GR.JP domain name, even from outside Japan.

AFAIK (last time I checked, which is quite a while ago), you'd only need an address in Japan for a .co.jp domain. For a simple .jp, registration from sombre gaijinland should be OK.

I use GoDaddy for my site, although I will move it soon. It's actually rather complex, so I have to block off a lot of time, which is what I'm waiting for .

The person in question is also using GoDaddy. He says he can register a .jp domain there as long as he has some type of contact in Japan, so I gave him my info. Is that the only check? That's really... uh... cool?

If Japanese isn't an issue I would use onamae.com as they are cheap and reliable. Probably the cheapest you will find for .jp.

If he wants to do it in English then jp-domains.com would be my suggestion. Prices are not bad and no funny business. They provide the local presence for no additional charge.

To purchase .co.jp you need a company, not just an address. Apparently a registered representative office of an overseas company is enough, but it still needs to be a company. The limit of 1 .co.jp domain per company still applies I believe.

For .jp you need a Japanese address. The registrars that offer .jp domains via English websites provide the address for you though, generally included in the price of the domain.

Great thread. thanks for the useful info as well.

For non .jp we have started moving our domains from godaddy over to namesilo.com - no coupon games and comes with free whois privacy.
