New House, new internet

Postby GomiGirl » Fri Aug 22, 2014 4:14 pm

Just moving into a brand new house (rental). This has not TV aerial or phone or internet yet. This house is completely detached and is on a freshly subdivided lot. It has a brand new address even. :-)

Thinking of which option is the best and you guys are the kechi sensible people I know.

I will be needing:

Internet (WiFi only is fine)
TV - terrestrial maybe or cable too.

Have an Apple TV so have iTunes etc sorted and a Hulu subscription.

Note this is not for me to live in but as a holiday rental so I don't need all the bells and whistles.

The main thing is that there is nothing there yet so would like to have a turn key solution including the internet line installed.

Not interested in a phone line.

I can't help feeling that I am teaching my grandmother little sister to suck eggs, but often bundling services helps you to get a good deal: cable TV together with the internet. As a rental, I suppose you are not so concerned with upload speeds either so cable can be a way to save a yen or two. Provider depends on the area. And I'm sure I've linked this before, but http://kakaku.com/bb/

Edited to add: indeed: excellent advice in this thread. I wonder if the OP read it viewtopic.php?f=27&t=29774&p=331278

I want to blow a raspberry at you...

But this is a different situation as there is not even a line into the house from the street.

BTW did you want to see our new listing...

That mean you'll have to get the single-residence version of whatever's on offer, and someone will come along and hook up a wire from the poles in the street to one of the small boxes visible on the side of the house in the first picture.

I am amused by the multiple uses of the phrase "full-sized"

Just brute force the password and steal the office wifi from NTT Higashi Nihon HQ. And it must have been fun wedging that double bed in there. (address in the title is incomplete: no chome number. That may be deliberate, though)

In terms of cabling in, I will guess that your options are naked fibre from NTT or that from the cable TV provider.

Risking another raspberry:
High-speed internet is inside the apartment

Problem solved!

That's only really useful if you're on the move. I also found it a bit hit-and-miss when I tried it at the start of last year; signal availability/strengh reminded me of my 90's era PHS (neither were really usable in my place of residence for a start). I'd definitely go for something which comes in through the wall on a wire and attach a wireless router.

Also (can't resist), since when were bog-standard Panasonic bathroom vanity units classed as "lovely designer fittings"?

I built it in the room. It ain't getting out in a hurry.

The house is 2.15 m wide inside and double beds are 1.6 m wide including the frame. So not alot of wriggle room - or swinging cats. But it is a sweet little place that makes for a fairly unique holiday rental for tourists and inside the SEZ. It is 2 minutes from the Park Hyatt and the address is always hidden by the website. So location is key.

But I need to review the copy - full sized is over used. Overcompensating for the narrowness of the house.

We have one of those too for use out and about but the Apple TV doesn't like them very much. It is like riding a push bike compared to driving the ferrari of fibre optics though. Too slow for my tastes but normal for FOB tourists - especially from China.

You also have conflicting check-in times.
