Vaccinations for entering Japan

Postby John Dillinger » Wed Nov 27, 2019 10:49 pm

Hey guys, having finally obtained the means, I'm planning on visiting Japan sometime next year or in 2021,and was wondering what vaccinations I'll need to get.

Whether you just hanging out at home around the BBQ and drinking PBR pisswater or traveling in Japan, you should make sure your normal series of vaccinations is up-to-date. It's easy to fall behind the 10-year limit on tetanus shots ( diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine): Get a tetanus shot done for sure.

Also, recently measles has become active everywhere partly because the MMR vaccines' protection can "wear off" after 30 years (measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine).

IF you're spending a lot of time hiking in the mountains or in the mosquitoes-infested rural areas in the dead of Japan's hellish summer, Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is recommended by the CDC. When I was going on the Shikoku Pilgrimage of 88 Temples, the evil Hitosujishima-ka --- tiger mosquitoes were full of Japanese Encephalitis.

Yep, as I said before, "Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is recommended by the CDC. " The user John Dillinger lists his "Location: Right outside Birmingham Alabama."

Good information on vaccinations and other health precautions can be found via the CDC website.

Excellent info Taro, I didn't know there was a Japanese Encephalitis vaccine. Is it readily available within Japan? What kind of clinic has these?

Ditto.... I'm always in the mountains in the summer months and never knew about this danger.

The chance of getting Japanese Encephalitis Japan is low---Only 9 cases in 2018 but this year there were more than 20 thanks to global warming. But if you're traveling your chances of getting it in Indonesia and Asia is high. I went to Borneo and I was damn lucky that I already had the two shots (the main vaccine shot and then the booster 28 days later).

Japanese Encephalitis vaccine Is available at every doctor's office but you have to state your "reason" (Asia travel) to get it since part of its cost is subsidized. I only paid 4,00yen just like two flu shots, but the English-speaking, fancy-pants Tokyo Midtown Clinic charges 6,600yen. (without insurance the US cost is $450-1000!).

Method 1:
Generally during your annual ningen dokku check-up you can request it and the ningen dokku people will place an order for it, if you tell them a reason for getting the shot. You will be asked to come back in a day or two for the shot. (The vaccine is in never in stock---I think it has a short expiration period.)

Method 2:
Go to you local GP or Internal Medicine clinic and ask to update your shots (almost everybody out of school has an expired tetanus vaccination and needs a Tetanus Booster Shot). Then, specifically ask for a Japanese Encephalitis vaccine and explain you're going an Asian adventure, hiking in the mosquito-infested boonies or like in my case working on a Japanese mosquito ranch (family rice farm).

Method 3:
If you are going the big university hospital for some other problem, just tell your doctor that you also need Japanese Encephalitis vaccine and explain your "reason." Really big hospitals always have the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine in stock and plenty of people ask just before the start of mosquito season in the early spring.
