Like I said, I don't judge on taste, but I can certainly defend my own: I do think preferring shaved poon is mostly a weird postmodern Paedobear thing with a healthy twist of OCD germaphobia and the fear of the natural (or unorganised), but I don't care either. It's a Foucalt thing. Order, discipline, and punish. The shaver I dated had a nice enough Gazoo that it wasn't torturous to look at, but she was also short enough that if things got pumping it looked a touch Paedo. I like groomed but not paipan. Shaving became a thing because of porn and I think it became a thing in porn because you get clearer shots of the full penetration. Because of censorship in Japan, there was never a reason to go hairless. It's as simple as that. My ex used to shave it clean for photo and DVD shoots because she was gravure idol. Women are conditioned to believe that men want them to be stylish and have perfect bodies, when men are actually drawn to someone who simply appears to be enjoying herself.

A few weeks ago, I was hanging out with some male friends and conversation turned to which female celebrities would be on my "lesbian list" (as it does). I duly rattled off the names of five famous women who I believe to be irrefutably stunning, interesting and talented and could therefore definitely turn me, if only for the night.

I won’t name them here, since public body shaming goes against every fibre of my being, but suffice to say there was a massive discrepancy between the way I, as a heterosexual female, viewed these women and the way they were perceived by my heterosexual male friends.

An actress whom I pinpointed because of her unique sense of style and mane of thick luscious locks was dismissed as looking like a "shaved horse". A supermodel whose glorious bone structure and timeless coolness I covet had, I was told, "the body of a prepubescent boy". A singer I admire for her glamour, vivaciousness and exotic colouring was dubbed "a ferret lady in Shirley Bassey’s old clothes".

Somewhat affronted, both on behalf of the women I’d mentioned but also because of my friends' assessment of my taste, I then asked them to name some famous women they thought were beautiful.

About ten names were provided for my consideration. They were all people I thought were pretty, in a sort of attainable, girl-next-door type of way. None of them fitted the super slender, uber-glamorous stereotype I’m used to seeing on the front cover of Vogue (or a men's magazine). More than half of them were over 40 and the majority of them were over a size ten. The list was the complete antithesis of the "never too young or thin" beauty paradigm huge swathes of women are striving for.

Fascinated by the discrepancies, I delved deeper and followed up by interviewing Dr David Bainbridge, Lecturer in Reproductive Biology at the University of Cambridge. What I discovered was that the gulf between what men find attractive and what women think they find attractive is a whacking great chasm.

What women think men want: Someone skinny.

What men actually want: Someone healthy.

There was no "one size fits all" rule for the women named in my friends’ list. Some were slender, others were more curvaceous. Crucially, however, all of them looked as though they were meant to be whatever size they were. They all positively glowed with health.

There weren’t any who were identified for their leggy qualities either, which I found surprising. Women are constantly being told men love long legs and, at five feet 11 inches tall, other women often tell me my legs make them froth at the mouth with envy.

Dr Bainbridge says: “Actually, length and size of legs is less important than we think. Biologically, what men are looking for is straightness of leg. If your legs are strong and straight, this indicates good health and genes.”

What women think men want: Huge boobs.

What men actually want: Proportion.

A glamour model who is famous for her spectacularly disproportionate assets was mentioned (she wasn’t on either list, but her name came up as a caricature of what is defined as "sexy"). Every man present agreed that she used to be much more attractive pre-boob job. A very slender frame with artificially added "curves" is trendy amongst the A-list, but my friends said they preferred a gentler, less contrived physique and generally that they were more fans of hips than breasts.

Dr Bainbridge says: “Women often complain that their partners don’t notice if they have lost weight. This is because we are programmed to notice proportion, not size. Traditionally, we are attracted to the ratio between waist and hip. ‘Child bearing hips’, which are considerably larger than the waist, indicate to a man that the female will be an excellent ‘vessel’ for his future children. Waist-to-hip ratio does not change that much if you become larger or smaller.”

What women think men want: Style.

What men actually want: Individuality.

Often, when women think they are being "quirky", what they are actually doing is wearing some of the more outlandish offerings from this season’s fashion collections. You only have to look around during London Fashion Week to see hoards of women looking equally daring, but essentially exactly the same. Following outrageous fashion trends is not the same as daring to be an individual.

Ultimately, my friends seemed to find most attractive women who looked comfortable in their own skin and had an identifiable sense of style, which was indisputably "them" and wasn’t constantly changing in keeping with the catwalks.

Dr Bainbridge says: “Men’s brains evolved long before fashion existed. Although being trendy is an indicator of wealth and status amongst women, these things are not enormously important to men. Instead, they are more interested in the proportions beneath the clothes.”

What women think men want: Someone who looks flawless.

What men actually want: Someone who looks like they’re having a good time.

“Look over there,” my friend said. “See those girls? I bet they look brilliant in a photo but I’d rather eat my own face than go and talk to them.”

The women in question were standing around a camera phone, each posing with identical hands on hips, chests thrust out, stomachs and cheekbones sucked in. They had not a hair out of place and they were (I reckon) about to post a photo to their social networking accounts in order to prove it.

It was unanimously concluded that they would have been much more attractive if they were just enjoying themselves, less obviously concerned with whether or not their lip gloss was freshly applied.

Dr Bainbridge says: “If feeling flawless makes a woman more confident and playful, then men will certainly find that attractive, but men are surprisingly good at working out when appearance is contrived or fake. They may still enjoy what they see, but inside they will know. Each of us is the descendant of thousands of generations of men who made sensible decisions about the women they wanted to bear their children."

What women think men want: A pout.

What men actually want: A smile.
