The Legendary Flied Egg

One of the bands featured on Andy Votel's new Vertigo label compilation is the oddly named "Flied Egg". A bit of googling reveals that they were a pioneering early 70's Japanese prog rock outfit. An original copy of their seminal "Dr. Siegel's Fried Egg Shooting Machine" sold on ebay last year for just over $300. Here they are in Hibiya giving it some thrash.

This picture was destined for the Random Gaijin thread until I took a closer look at the source page. It turns out that the 2 year-old munchkin there is Shigeru "Jimmy" Narumo, guitarist with Flied Egg and a revered figure in Japan's music scene. The woman was a member of the Occupation forces who was posted to live in Narumo's family home. She would regularly play American records on her phonograph which he cites as a major childhood influence.

"Rolling Down The Broadway" performed live by Flied Egg in 1972. Julian Cope doesn't like them much:
...Flied Egg...brought forth nothing but more of the same diluted and generic Western rock swill as they had generated in their previous guise. And although highly successful in Japan during their brief life span, Flied Egg's records of the early '70s are, in the cold light of the early twenty-first century, just more of the same Strawberry Path-like hit and miss hotchpotch of cruddy cliche as before, plus lashings of the shrill Uriah Heep-like spewdo operetta copped from the Heep's dopey 1971 SALISBURY LP overlain in order to give the impression that it was somehow up-to-date...
