Ok, I have been forced to watch a lot of women's ice skating lately. I'll admit it: I love it when they munch....when Brian Botanos also much, I'm a happy person, but not as much as when the chicks crash and burn. Plus the chicks generally are nice to look at. Some of the guys look like onabe. But I digress.
Just from my memory (not reliable), maybe 10-20 years ago, the ice skaters didn't fall on their ASSES as much as they do now. It seems that the winner of a competition is the person who fell down and went boom the least.
Not that I'm laying awake at night fretting over this, but if this is the case and someone has a stack of figure skating demolition derby stats on hand that can explain this, feel free.

I think that it is because jumps have become emphasized over all the other elements of figure skating in recent years. Best jumper/jumps now equals best in show, so to speak. Traditionally, figure skating focused on spins, steps & turns, and spirals in addition to the jumps. Now, the jumps have taken some sort of special importance over the other figures. Or so I'm told...

Great example of this was Ito Midori, who nearly triumphed at the Albertville Olympics back in '92. She was a helluva jumper. Figures - not so much.

You couldn't do a figure of 8 in a bobsled without falling on your bum...

I think she's cute. Her elegance allows me to see past the floppy ears and Down's Syndrome..
