Beck's Next Single Features Christina Ricci, A.K.A. 'Kurisuti-na'

Next month in Los Angeles, Beck will shoot the video for "Hell Yes," the third single from his latest album, Guero. The bleepy, blippy tune features vocal contributions from none other than Christina Ricci, who voices a Japanese sushi waitress (and is credited in the album's liner notes as "Kurisuti-na")....
"I had this voice in my head that was saying 'please enjoy.' I think it was kind of lodged in my brain from flights to Japan, or rides on the bullet train where you hear the announcer saying, 'We will be arriving in 15 minutes, lunch cart will be coming. Please enjoy,' " Beck said. "So it was just one of those things that felt like it should be in the song. And we went around to a bunch of sushi places in L.A., sort of, like, auditioning waitresses for the part. But none of them got it.
"So one day Christina was in the studio, and she tried it and just absolutely nailed it. ... It's really not funky at all. Kind of like me saying in a deep, boring voice, 'Yeah, that's it.' It most definitely was not hip-hop...more....

Beck?!?!

I seem to be be a member of an ever-shrinking group with no affinity whatsoever for 70s sounds, 70s-ish funk, or anything musically similar from that era.

I have, however, taken a shining to some retro stuff. Robbie Williams Swing When You're Winning encouraged a new affinity for the Brat Pack and especially Mr. Sinatra. You can have Beck - I'll take Old Blue Eyes any day.

Well, I have many more CDs and LPs of Frankie than Beck myself. But Beck's '96 "Where It's At" always brings a smile to my face when I hear it. However, I've always wondered why Becks music that's full of sardonic humor goes over well in Japan where nobody can understand it well. Without the lyrics, Beck's stuff is pretty lame but Japanese loooove it. Saaa.

OK Taro, you said you like some Beck, so let me ask you a question. I saw this video a day or so ago, and immediately I wondered if this wasn't a monumental joke by Beck to get people to listen to absolutely unlistenable crap, and watch absolutely inane visuals. So my question is, do people actually LIKE this rubbish?

Yeah, ha ha cute little robots. But doesn't the music suck?

It is my theory that lately, "musicians" are trying to make their music suck as bad as possible, it's a huge joke on the audience, to see if they can get people to like absolute crap.
