Seattle Times: Japanese rock scene starts to bubble up
NEW YORK — "Japanese rock" might conjure images of Zen gardens, with bonsai trees and quiet streams. But the elaborate mini-encyclopedia of Japanese music called "jrock, ink." is anything but still. Reading from right to left, like a Japanese graphic novel, "jrock, ink." is a spunky, fast-paced rundown of 40 of the hottest rock-music acts in Japan...Yun spoke about some of the bands most primed to make it big in America: X Japan - "The whole idea behind X Japan was to express ... the four extremes of human emotion all at the same time, and to embody it in not only their music but their dress. That's a pretty tall order, but that's a totally Eastern concept."...Princess Princess: "I hope that more people will know about them after I write about them because they were just a total breakthrough. I don't think there's any equivalent in the U.S. An all-girl band playing in the style of Van Halen. It's kind of nuts."...more...

The same book:

Japan Today: 40 of the biggest rock acts in Japan
There is a paucity of English books on Japanese music, so Baltimore music critic Josephine Yun's "JRock, Ink," a survey of top Japanese bands from the last two decades, is welcome — as far as it goes...more...

There is a jrock ink magazine now. If you fill out the subscription, they are offering the first copy free of charge.

What is jrock ink?
jrock ink prides itself on being the first English-language print magazine to exclusively feature Japanese rock music.

Is there any relation to the book jrock, ink.: a concise report on 40 of the biggest rock acts in japan?
Yes. Team members responsible for jrock, ink. (the book) play similar roles in this project (whose title is not punctuated). They are joined by a crack team of professionals who each bring their unique skills to the table.

How often does the magazine come out?
Quarterly; in January, April, July, and October.

I want to write for you. What should I do?
If you would like to write for us, we will need two samples of your work, sent in the body of an e-mail to ink@jrockinkmagazine.com. No attachments, please.

Do you take cosplay/fanart submissions?
Yes. Original cosplay photos and fanart should be sent to:

jrock ink magazine
214 W. Monument St., Ste. 4F
Baltimore, MD 21201
USA

Digital (scanned) cosplay photos and fanart should be at least 300 dpi and also sent to ink@jrockinkmagazine.com.

Where can I buy the magazine?
The first issue cannot be purchased. It is only available to those who fill out the subscription form on this Web site, FREE OF CHARGE. (Happy Holidays!)

How?
Menu. Link labeled 'Subscribe.' Click. Type. Send.

Who ARE you people?
We are a group of concerned citizens dedicated to bringing the world of Japanese rock to the people. If you should need more information, the magazine will likely answer any and all questions.

Thank you, and please enjoy
.
