I quite enjoyed Utada's cover. I'm not the biggest Utada fan or anything, but I've always though she has more actual singing ability than the majority of the JPoop artists out there.

Actually, upon relistening to the Green Day version, I think I actually prefer Utada's

Reminds me of the Richie Blackmore deciple I saw at the Chicken Shack in Fussa some 12 or more years ago. I talked with him a few times, he was a cram school instructor I believe.
His backing band included a keyboard player complete with fake cardboard John Lord mustache.
He would end the show by yanking all the strings off his Strat at the end of a spectacular solo. Anyone else remember seeing him?

I agree - to some extent - this song should be sung with more subtle voice. Green Day already did the shouty angsty version - someone with delicacy and patience would suit this.

She just seemed, well, she wanted to shout her way through the song.

Also the mixing on this version sucks. And her postion. Too close to the microphone - too much reverb.

Amen! Actually whenever I ask my music industry cohorts (Japanese) who they feel is a good vocal artist they almost always unanimously say Utada - I think that speaks volumes in itself...

I think Utada is alright on some of her songs. I always hated that "Fly me to the moon" cover though. Ugh!
