Cantopop Couple Arrested For Drugs In Shibuya

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Mar 04, 2009 11:20 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]The Standard: Pot idols on Tokyo rap
Hong Kong singing idols Kelvin Kwan Chor-yiu and Wei Si have been arrested in Tokyo for the alleged possession of marijuana. The Cantopop couple were still being held by Japanese authorities last night, eight days after their arrest in the city's trendy Shibuya nightclub district. Kwan and Wei Si have both taken part in government-backed anti-drug campaigns and their arrests - which were only made public yesterday - have reignited concerns over teenage drug abuse at a time when the government is trying to stamp it out...According to reports in Japan, the couple entered the country on February 20 as tourists and were arrested around 1am on February 24. Kwan and Wei Si...are alleged to have been arguing with a shopkeeper in a 24-hour store when police were called. Marijuana was allegedly found in a cigarette they were carrying. In an interview with police, Canadian citizen Kwan, 25, reportedly admitted the drug had been given to him by a friend in Hong Kong. Wei Si, 26, a British citizen, said she did not know it was marijuana...more...

This Chinese language report seems to suggest the argument took place in Don Quijote in Shibuya. Edit: Japanese sources report they were being accused of shoplifting in the store. Wei Si is also known as Jill Vidal and that's the name which TV and newspapers are using.

It would be strange if the police searched them for 'arguing'.

They were accused of shoplifting so it seems that they were being searched for stolen goods and police turned up the dope. I haven't read whether any shoplifted items were also found.

Shoplifting at Donki?

Postby BO-SENSEI » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:38 pm

Why, Donki has such great prices, makes you wonder what they were trying to steal? Weed, stuff from Donkihote, and a night in Shibuya, makes you wonder what they were up to.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Makes you wonder if the shoplifting accusation was a setup by police to give them a reason to search them.

The police weren't involved until the shop staff called them. I'd still like to know whether the couple had actually nicked anything. If they hadn't, then it begs the question of why the Donki staff thought they had.

If she took heroin through customs rather than buying it in Japan then she definitely had some kind of death wish. That would make it more likely that she did try to shoplift something from Donki. I wonder how thrilling it all seems now.

She probably has a prescription for it, in which case it's no problem, right?

Just a late update since I linked here in another recent thread:

Cantopop singer Jill Vidal escaped more jail time after she admitted in a Tokyo court to heroin possession and received a two-year sentence that will be suspended for three years.

Well, some Japanese heroines are small enough to fit into luggage.

I believe it is like a term of probation. She receives a two year sentence, suspended for three years and thus remains free. I f she has no further run ins with the police during that three year term of "suspension", she has served her debt. If she were to get in trouble again during that three year term, she would immediately begin serving the two year sentence given to her previously, and then the penalty for the new offense.

How this is supposed to work with foreigners is beyond me, since they won't be in Japan anyway.

They seem to do that for entertainers and people who don't have an apparent J-dope connection in J-land, because it is less drain on the assets of Japan to just convict them and deport them. The conviction negates another entry into Japan without a waiver and a large majority of countries have laws that will subject them to penalties at home.

The more interesting point with that is when they return to HK, they can be subject to punishment there also, or should they go to mainland China it is almost automatic.

The bad side of the story is one can be executed for use and/or possession of heroin in Mainland China. That could possibly change their whole day.....
