I know the guy at Second Harvest Japan; good person making a difference. One gaijin that understands the meaning of 'mottainai'..

Great logo and great website doncha think? Made by our own gomichild as support to this fabulous organisation.

Did you also know that whenever you make a purchase from themeatguy.jp, you can click the donate button and he will match your purchase with a donation to second harvest. http://www.themeatguy.jp/communitye.php

The meat guy is great - villis pies, roast lamb, mint snags and fantastic cheese. All delivered right to your door.

;) I noticed that.. I hope I didn't steal your thunder, GC.. If you were going to make a grand announcement, my apologies..

I'll attempt to post Second Harvest's activities on the FG calendar, when I have time.. It's nice to see people 'doing' rather than just complaining..

Is there a financial/legal reason for the waste of that food in Japan? I remember hearing (in the US at least) that many grocery stores cannot donate food that has reached its expiration date because:

1. It cannot be properly be categorized as a "loss" if the product reaches consumer hands even if no money is paid for it. It must be destroyed.

2. If someone gets sick off of it somehow, they will be held legally responsible even if they didn't profit financially from it in the first place.

I'm not so sure about the first one holding true these days for private commercial endeavors, but I do know that state based institutions (such as universities) in several US states can't donate goods because of reason 1. As a matter of fact, attempting to "liberate" food or office equipment (such as computers) from the trash is considered theft from those institutions...

Yeah, I've heard the same thing.. I'm not sure about Japan, but Second Harvest has a weekly food pick-up from Costco so it seems they've worked out a situation where they can both categorize donated food as a loss and help the needy..
