TV Announcer Breaks Neck On TV

This video makes for uncomfortable viewing so some of you may not care to watch it.

TV announcer Tetsushi Yanagita has been seriously hurt in an outdoor broadcast in Miyazaki prefecture over the weekend. In the segment above, he took part in a bout of "buttocks sumo" where two competitors stand back to back and try to push the other off a platform in the middle of a rice paddy. Yanagita loses but swan dives into the shallow field and comes down head first at a horrible angle. Everyone thinks he must be joking when he lies face down but it seems he seriously damaged his cervical vertebrae and had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital. TV Miyazaki have said on their website that he is conscious but may well have damaged his spinal cord. Japanese links and reports here.

The video has been pulled from Youtube. When I watched it the first time, I was thinking, if the poor bastard didn't have a broken neck before he sure did after the way they were yanking his head and reefing at his neck. I hope he sues the hell out of them, but he won't.

A local Yomiuri update says that Yanagita has recovered some movement in both his hands after surgery.
