Defensive Driving Tips

Postby tidbits » Fri Aug 27, 2010 11:31 pm

I hope others can post something similar to this topics here. I saw a TV programme about road accident investigation explained how road design and optical illusions cause traffic accidents. One of it showed how two drivers who travel at about the same speed, (45 degree left or right away from each other) towards the same intersection might not have realised each other's presence, because of the same speed that doesn't appear as a "moving object" that "alert" the mind, even under bright daylight with open field only at the side. Unfortunately I can't find a good video yet.

Whoa, since when does Japan have "road design"?

I thought drunk road crews just randomly went out every day and littered the streets with unneeded repairs.

Oh, they drink on the job. I mean why would they start a project and then suddenly, halfway done, stop all work. Makes total sense now, they forgot where they were the day before.

Not excactly what I am looking for, but this video shows some of the intersection traffic accidents caught on traffic camera in Japan. I think at mark 0:39 it says something about in case the problem lies in the road signs, then they will need to improve the condition to reduce the accidents' rate. And one of the intersection shown later actually has been reported having more than 20 accidents in a year.

I wonder which part of the rule "at a crossing if you don't have visibility or right of the way don't go and proceed with caution" those people have missunderstood...

I always have honking idiots at crossing that would like me to cut into incomming traffic. Or BMW drivers that turn right inside my turn when they find me too slow...
Same category as the SUV that honk when you stop for loading in at the supermarket parking... Even if it's the primary purpose of the whole facility...
Or when you wait at the middle of the intersection, the other light turn green and the starting traffic honk at you and block you while you have a textbook right of the way...
Driving on week ends is really a nightmare with assholes parade on the road...
With a car as easily recogniseable as mine, i should really stop giving the finger to all these clown... Might end up as a roadkill sooner than later...

BUT on a side note... Turning like this in front of the car turning in the other direction is a japanese thing... In Yurop you turn behind... Meaning you always have a perfect view of the incoming traffic...

55 mins video in Japanese including the CM time. I wish there would be more similar videos to what the video here show from 00:23 onwards, regarding optical illuson and road design & construction.

(*FYI, many seemed to be accessing the video at the time I post this, did not have a smooth viewing)

The best defense is a good offense.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

I watched the program, and just laughed at how all the drivers and scooter riders assumed the crash position several seconds before impact. No attempt to brake or steer to lessen impact. I realize the program used simulations, but that made them ridiculous.

Usually, they don't ask Jerry Bruckheimer to make those movie. That's why there is also really little explosions...
