subtitling

Postby Bucky » Thu Oct 28, 2010 6:09 am

We are dipping our toe into the world of subtitling anime and I am curious if any of you FG's out there have much experience? I am most interested in understanding how long it will take to do a minute worth of running video once we are familiar with the software? We will get the translation done in advance as we will receive the Japanese script in hard copy and then we will translate into English then drop the subtitle text in. That way the translators can translate and the subtitler can subtitle.

Our client has been pushing for us to use aegisub (http://www.aegisub.org/) as our tool of choice. I have to admit the price is right as it is shareware.

I don't have actual professional experience with arranging subtitling, but based on amateur efforts, if you have the text and the right software (and aegisub seems OK) that allows you to align it with the audio, it should be a breeze for a pro.
It's probably a good idea to let the translator know how much time they've got for phrases so they can determine the length of their translations (The longer the sentence in Japanese, the greater the gap that will arise in English because of all the honorifics).

AO, yeah it would seem so. I have, however, been having problems with it on the Mac platform. In tests I have run, Aegisub works well on a Windows box, but on OS X on a Mac not so much.
