American jailed in North Korea invited arrest deliberately

An American sentenced to six years’ hard labour in North Korea pretended to have secret US information and was deliberately arrested in a bid to become famous and meet the imprisoned US missionary Kenneth Bae, North Korean state media said on Saturday.

Matthew Miller, 25, of Bakersfield, California, had prepared his story in advance and written in a notebook that he was seeking refuge after failing in an attempt to collect information about the US government, state agency KCNA said.

It said Miller wanted to become a “second Edward Snowden”, the former US intelligence contractor who released details of its surveillance programs.

“He perpetrated the above-said acts in the hope of becoming a ‘world famous guy’ and the ‘second Snowden’ through intentional hooliganism,” KCNA said.

“This is an intolerable insult and mockery of the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] and he therefore, deserved punishment,” KCNA said.

Miller was arrested when he tore up the tourist visa he used to enter the isolated country in April, state media said at the time. He was sentenced to six years’ hard labour by a North Korean court last Sunday.

“The results of the investigation made it clear that he did so not because of a simple lack of understanding and psychopathology, but deliberately perpetrated such criminal acts for the purpose of directly going to prison,” state media said.

It said Miller had deliberately sought his arrest so he could investigate prison and human rights conditions, and negotiate the release of Bae, who is serving a hard labour sentence after being convicted of crimes against the state last year.

Seems the guy achieved his purpose. He looks surprised how easy it was.

I do wonder why the US doesn't ban its citizens to travel to NK. There is also a ban for Cuba, so why not NK?

Kim Jong-un ill

That Kim Jong-un is carrying a few extra pounds has been obvious since he became North Korea’s leader in late 2011. But speculation that his increasing weight – apparently partly due to a weakness for cheese – has brought on debilitating spells of gout rose dramatically this week, after he failed to attend an important parliamentary session.

Rumours that Kim, reputedly a heavy smoker, is in less than robust health surfaced earlier this year when state TV footage showed him with a pronounced limp and looking noticeably bulkier than he did during his first few months as leader.

On Friday, North Korean authorities, in a rare display of openness about their leader’s health, admitted for the first time that Kim was suffering from an “uncomfortable physical condition”, although they did not confirm rumours that the 31-year-old, Swiss-educated leader was suffering from gout.

State media issued the brief comment on Kim’s physical condition after he failed to appear at a session of the supreme people’s assembly – North Korea’s national legislature, where leaders would normally be expected to make an appearance.

In a one-hour documentary aired on Thursday that showed a limping Kim visiting a factory near Pyongyang, the narrator said: “The wealth and prosperity of our socialism is thanks to the painstaking efforts of our marshal, who keeps lighting the path for the people, like the flicker of a flame, despite suffering discomfort.”

Kim’s three-week public absence comes months after he was shown limping, and wearing loose clothes, during inspections of military units and factories.

His last appearance was on 3 September, when Kim, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol-ju, was shown sitting in the front-row seats at a concert by the North Korean girl group the Moranbong Band.

Despite his love of baseball and basketball – evident in his friendship with the former NBA star Dennis Rodman – Kim is not known for his sporting prowess beyond occasional outings on horseback. South Korea’s Joongang Ilbo newspaper charitably speculated that his limp had been caused by a sports injury, but Yonhap suggested that the portly dictator’s health problems were more serious.

The South Korean news agency quoted a source said to be familiar with North Korean affairs as saying that Kim was suffering from gout, diabetes and high blood pressure. Kim Il-sung, Kim’s grandfather and North Korea’s founder, and his father Kim Jong-il both suffered from gout, as does his elder brother, Kim Jong-nam.

[...]

Speculation is mounting that Kim, who may have been trying to gain weight to resemble his revered grandfather, was paying the price for his penchant for alcohol and rich food.

“I’m not a physician, and even if I were, I probably would not be his. That said, his lifestyle – the weight gain, smoking, and extreme stress do not help,” said Daniel Pinkston, deputy project director for the North East Asian programme at the International Crisis Group.

Pinkston said he believed Kim’s most loyal supporters were likely to be “sympathetic” and wish him a speedy recovery. However, if his condition proves serious, it could trigger instability – the threat of which could affect his treatment, especially if it involved surgery, he added.

“Dictators are very suspicious of potential challengers, and of course, they are vulnerable when sedated,” said Pinkston. “Notice that his grandfather never got his tumour removed from his neck”.

Holy fucking fornicate, how the hell...

http://www.japantoday.com/category/sports/view/n-korea-beats-japan-in-womens-soccer-to-win-gold-at-asian-games
N Korea beats Japan in women's soccer to win gold at Asian Games
North Korea upset defending champions Japan 3-1 to win the Asian Games women’s soccer gold on Wednesday—and again it was all down to leader Kim Jong-Un for sharing his wisdom.

Kim Yun-Mi, captain Ra Un-Sim and Ho Un-Byol were all on target as the North Koreans totally outplayed World and Asian Cup holders Japan to avenge their loss in the final four years ago.

The North’s players squealed with joy, some bursting into tears, at the final whistle as around 60 of their flag-waving comrades in official tracksuits hopped with delight in the stands.

After the match, their coach dedicated the gold to North Korean leader Kim, a big sports fan who is reportedly ailing.

“This was an inevitable result as the North Korean players trained with dedication and never stopped fighting to return the warm love of our dear leader Kim Jong-Un, who watched over us” Kim Kwang-Min told reporters.

“Our respected leader visited our training camp on July 11 and gave the team valuable instruction on how to win the gold medal at the Asian Games. This victory reflects the boundless feelings of the players for our dear leader.”

South Korean fans chanted support for their neighbors from north of the border throughout, many waving unification flags showing the Korean peninsula in blue on a white background.

The North’s players sprinted over to the main stand after a celebratory team hug and unfurled their country’s flag as thousands of local fans seated behind huge unification banners with the same design serenaded them with: “We are one!”

At the medal ceremony, local fans and the delirious North Korean delegation continued to chant the same mantra to each other from opposite sides of the pitch.

“When our team was being cheered on by South Korea I felt we are one nation,” said coach Kim. “We are all brothers and sisters. I could sense a feeling of Korean unification.”

Ouch, you got me.

But now I think of it, it would not be such a bad idea to form a British soccer team. It would likely do much better at the world cup.

I don't blame you at all. It's stupid all right. Whether it would make a lot of difference or not I don't know. According to the pundits I hear on Radio 5 there is a deeper and more severe problem in that the clubs are all powerful, wealthy beyond sanity, oft owned by foreigners and have absolutely zero commitment to the national team however it may be constructed. Their players, and they are THEIR players, understand they are not to make too much effort in order to minimise injuries and minimise the time they play in things like the world cup. To my inexpert eyes England always looks very relaxed and easygoing and at that level you are up against excellent teams who really are giving it their all. The results are not surprising.

Mr Kim might be able to turn it round - He has ways of motivating players no doubt.

Anyone else struck by the apparent huge number of empty seats at that Asian Games women's footy final? Perhaps they have to take crowd separation to extremes for games like that? Nah, no-one is very interested.

North Korea capital 'under lockdown' amid rumours of threat to Kim Jong-un
Travel ban triggers renewed speculation about stability of regime of Kim Jong-un
The North Korean capital has been placed under lockdown, according to sources with Pyongyang, raising new questions about the stability of Kim Jong-un's regime.

Quoting sources within North Korea, the respected New Focus International news web site has reported that a ban on new travel passes to leave or enter Pyongyang was introduced on September 27.

And while the North Korean authorities have in the past limited access to the capital, the latest restrictions even apply to permanent residents of Pyongyang, who are by definition the elite of the regime.

"This sort of action suggests there has either been an attempted coup or that the authorities there have uncovered some sort of plot against the leadership," Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Tokyo's Waseda University and an authority on North Korean affairs, told The Telegraph.

"If it is a military-backed coup, then the situation in Pyongyang will be very dangerous and I have heard reports that Kim has been moved out of the capital," he said...

The first signs are not encouraging.

Or actually, they are...

No sign of Kim Jong-un as North Korea welcomes home Asian Games athletes

North Koreans lined the streets of Pyongyang to welcome home athletes from the Asian Games – but sports-fanatic Kim Jong-un, who is believed to be ill, was not among them.

Senior officials from the Workers’ party and the military welcomed the athletes at the airport on Sunday, state media said, but there was no mention of Kim attending.

North Korea’s leader has not been seen in public for more than a month, prompting speculation about his health. However, officials on a surprise visit to South Korea denied on Sunday that there was anything wrong with him.

Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans came out on to the streets to greet the athletes who took part in the games in South Korea, state media reports said.

North Korea’s 150 athletes won 11 gold medals and 25 silver and bronze in the country’s best Asian Games performance since 1990.

For Kim-watchers, N Korean anniversary on Friday is pivotal

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been out of sight for over a month and if he does not appear at a key political event early on Friday, speculation will intensify over his health and grip on power in the secretive country.

North Korea’s state media, which usually chronicles the 31-year-old’s whereabouts in great detail, has not made any mention of Kim’s activities since he appeared at a concert with his wife on Sept 3.

Friday is the 69th anniversary of the founding of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, an event Kim has marked in the past two years with a post-midnight visit to the Pyongyang mausoleum where the bodies of his father and grandfather are interred.

...

Kim, who has rapidly gained weight since coming to power after his father died of a heart attack in 2011, had been seen walking with a limp since an event with key officials in July.

...

Abrahamian said he believes Kim’s absence has been due to health reasons, and not that he’s been usurped.

“Kim Jong Un has always shared power with other key figures and even if the internal balance of power has shifted, it is unlikely that they would want to remove him, given his unmatchable symbolic value. Again, though, everyone is guessing,” he said.

North Korea leader Kim is still in charge, has leg injury: source

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is in firm control of his government but has hurt his leg, a source with access to the secretive North's leadership said, playing down speculation over the 31-year-old's health and grip on power.

North Korea's state media, which usually chronicles Kim's whereabouts in great detail, has not made any mention of his activities since he attended a concert with his wife on Sept. 3, and Kim was absent from early state media coverage of a major political anniversary on Friday.

In the previous two years, Kim marked the anniversary of the founding of North Korea's Workers' Party with a post-midnight visit to the Pyongyang mausoleum where the bodies of his father and grandfather are interred.

Last year, that visit was covered about four hours later by the state's KCNA news agency, and by the daily Rodong Sinmun newspaper. As of about 8 a.m. (7.00 p.m. EDT) on Friday, there was no KCNA report of an event at the mausoleum. Friday's Rodong Sinmun could not yet be seen on its website.

Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, did not always attend the Oct. 10 memorial event when he was in power.

The source, who has close ties to Pyongyang and Beijing, said on Thursday that Kim hurt his leg while inspecting military exercises.

"He ordered all the generals to take part in drills and he took part too. They were crawling and running and rolling around, and he pulled a tendon," the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"He injured his ankle and knee around late August or early September while drilling because he is overweight. He limped around in the beginning but the injury worsened," the source said.

Kim, who has rapidly gained weight since coming to power after his father died of a heart attack in 2011, had been seen walking with a limp since an event with important officials in July, which would imply he may have aggravated an earlier injury.

Kim needs about 100 days to recuperate, said the source, whose information could not be independently verified.

"Kim Jong Un is in total control," said the source.

[...]

Some North Korea watchers also suggest that Kim may have been sidelined in a power struggle, a scenario they say was reinforced by the unexpected visit on Saturday of a high-level delegation to the closing ceremony of the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

Another interpretation of that visit holds that it was meant to convey stability in Pyongyang.

The source with knowledge of Kim Jong Un's health said rumors of a coup were "rubbish".

"It would have to be a very subtle coup indeed not to disrupt international travel plans," said Andray Abrahamian of the Choson Exchange, a Singapore-based group running a program for North Koreans in Southeast Asia.

North Korea is a hereditary dictatorship centered on the ruling Kim family. Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, is known to have an official role within the ruling party. His brother, Kim Jong Chol, and his estranged half-brother are not in the public eye.

Kim was absent from a Sept. 25 meeting of the Supreme People's Assembly, or parliament, the first he has not attended since coming to power three years ago.

However, Kim's name has not disappeared from state propaganda.

Thursday's edition of the Rodong Sinmun carried three letters to Kim from overseas allies on its front page, and has reported on returning athletes from the Asian Games who thanked "the Marshal" for his support during the competition.

Abrahamian said it was unlikely Kim had been usurped.

"Kim Jong Un has always shared power with other key figures and even if the internal balance of power has shifted, it is unlikely that they would want to remove him, given his unmatchable symbolic value. Again, though, everyone is guessing," he said.

More

It suddenly starts to make sense to me.

The period of 100 days indicates that the guy probably broke his leg or ankle.

His second and third in power suddenly visiting South-Korea and the lock-down of Pyongyang at the same time probably indicates that the "Dear Leader" wanted them to stay away for a while, while he himself went through some critical period. So, it was a way to prevent a coup of some kind.

North Korean leader reappears in public — with cane

Image

With that unique haircut, and familiar wide smile, North Korea's young dictator resurfaced Tuesday in the traditional style of his tightly controlled nation: state media reports that showed Kim Jong Un offering "field guidance," surrounded by his usual entourage of generals and officials.

The only clue to Kim's almost 40-day absence from public view was the walking cane he leaned on, according to photographs Tuesday in the Rodong Sinmun, the daily newspaper of North Korea's ruling Workers Party. A report in the Korean Central News Agency, gave no date for Kim's field trip, nor any explanation of why he had made no public outing since Sept. 3, when he attended a concert with his wife.

God that is a great site. I skimmed over and found this

http://kcnawatch.nknews.org/article/euhi

I love how shotty the construction on the building in the background looks. None of the window frames are level.

Yep. That is exactly the building I am talking about. First the window frames are all different sizes. Secondly, they don't align vertically. Third, Where is the scaffolding?
