I'll agree, the videos are well done (I actually watched all of the Sexy Beijing vids on the Danwei site). As a foreigner living in China, it's nice to see another laowai manage to pick up the language and converse with the locals.

That said, she'd be obviously hard-pressed to find decent men in several of the areas filmed like Bar Street (umm, men + alcohol = probably not the best place to find a "nice guy"), the cafe/restaurant area (which is right next to the insular embassy row), and the hutong area (which is heavily foreigner-oriented a la Khaosan Road in Bangkok).

I'll beg to disagree on that one. If we're talking foreign females, in China there are a couple of points in their favor: the local lasses are very conservative when it comes to sex and many hook up with a boyfriend early on (in the uni setting, where I am, most girls find a steady boyfriend - with a significant likelihood of marriage - by their 2nd year in school). All of which means the rest of the male pop. is fair game. And as I've remarked to a few locals here, if you can't find somebody interesting in a country with a quarter of the world's population, then the problem probably isn't with the locals.

I won't comment on her nose, but you're absolutely right, finding "a nice Jewish boy" (or any other small racial/ethnic/religious category) in China would be well nigh impossible. A simple look at the foreign population vs. the huge local pop. should make that abundantly clear.

The nose thing? On retrospect most Jews I've seen or met didnt have especially distinctive noses, but then every myth has its origins. /I hereby apologise for blaming her unattractive nose on her heritage.

That's pretty interesting stuff. I first heard about the Jews in China from a guy I met in Tokyo. He was Italian but spoke Chinese. When I asked him about where he picked it up he told me his mother was a Turkish Jew from Shanghai. I had to get him to explain that one and he said that there was a Jewish merchant community there for several hundred years during colonial days. They all pretty much left after WW II though.

It seems the Koreans feel the same way (but then again, they hate everyone). When I was in a Japanese Language School I had a nomikai with some Korean classmates and one American girl in our class. At one point one of the Korean guys suddenly asked me if I was an Israel-jin.

I thouht it was a strange question to ask out of the blue but I answered that I wasn't. Then he started going on about how Israelis have a lot of money and was just to about to go down that path when I realized he had wanted to ask me if I was Jewish but didn't know the Japanese word.

Then I asked him if he had meant yudaya-jin, which aparently is pretty similar to the Korean word for Jew so he recognized it and confirmed that that was what he had meant. Then I let him know that the other American with us (who was out of earshot) was a Jew and an Israeli to boot, so he suddenly shut up. I kind of wish I hadn't told him. I would have liked to have heard what he was going to say.
