According to this account (Japanese) she was in tears at rehearsal because she couldn't remember the Japanese lyrics. The follow-up report says that Shoko Nakagawa, who also appears in the video clip, told her that if she could get the dance right, she needn't worry about forgetting the words. No-one seems to have mentioned anything about staying in tune. Having said all that, Leah Dizon has certainly made the most of every opportunity that has come her way. She may not have much talent but even the best marketing team will fail if the individual can't take the pace of the Japanese entertainment world. Also, there aren't too many foreigners who have been invited on to Kohaku so she deserves a measure of respect for getting that far.

This is why I love watching kohaku uta gassen. The awful audio mixing job by NHK engineers tends to make it very obvious who actually has musical talent and who is just a product of studio engineering trickery. I'd say second in line after Leah Dizon would be most of the members of SMAP, who would probably risk getting laughed out of a neighborhood karaoke joint while trying to sing their own songs.

It is possible that left41twistywhatever is a canine and can hear in that upper range where true J-pop talent resides. Or he/she/it suffers from musical ear syndrome

TOKYO-- Leah Dizon, an American singer currently popular in Japan, will retire in March due to stress, weekly magazine Shukan Gendai reports. According to the magazine, Dizon will not renew any contracts with advertisers or her agency.
