As part of the campaign for their Tsubaki range of hair products, Shiseido produces commercials which feature several leading celebrities together rather than just relying on one to be the face of the brand. Not a groundbreaking innovation but it does lead to some mild public curiosity about who has been chosen for the latest TV spot. The name that stands out in the new autumn line-up is the half-French TV presenter Christel Takigawa. Takigawa built up a small cult following during her seven year stint fronting "News Japan", Fuji TV's late-night news programme. Indeed, her retirement from the show last week drew fairly wide media coverage as well as speculation as to what she might do next. Her fans felt Takigawa had been pushed aside to make way for new presenter, Yuri Akimoto, because Akimoto has larger breasts. Shiseido decided to capitalize on this interest and Takigawa features prominently at the beginning as well as the end of the clip above, in her commercial "debut". There's a slight added edge to the choice which Shiseido wouldn't have known when they were filming. Their campaign emphasizes that the celebrities are all prime examples of Japanese beauty and Takigawa is a Japanese national. However, when presenter Yutaka Hasegawa spoke on other show about Akimoto taking over the job, he used the over-familar "koitsu" and also referred to Takigawa as a "gaijin". You can see this in the clip below, but probably not for long, because Fuji is on a mission to delete it whenever it pops up on the web.

Hasegawa was roundly criticized for his rudeness to both Akimoto and Takigawa, even by those who suspect he was just joking. "Gaijin" is a word that the TV networks prefer their presenters to avoid because it can cause offence. Takigawa's fans also pointed out how inappropriate it was given that she has Japanese nationality by birth. Hasegawa's producers quickly issued an apology but Hasegawa himself has not spoken on the matter.
