Softbank and SMAP

The Nikkei Trendy has announced a top 10 ranking of TV commercials for 2009. The ranking is based on whether the campaigns contributed to sales and the advertiser's brand image, rather than any creative criteria so not many of them are particularly remarkable. Here's the list with a few examples to give you a taste.

1. Softbank campaign featuring SMAP
2. KDDi campaign for the au brand featuring Arashi
3. NTT Docomo Answerhouse campaign

4. Lotte campaign for Fit's
5. Nintendo DSi campaign featuring comedy duo Audrey
6. Nippon Coca Cola's campaign for Fanta featuring Asashoryu

7. Suntory campaign for Boss coffee
8. Kirin campain for Ichiban Shibori featuring Ichiro
9. AFLAC campaign with the AFLAC duck
10. NTT East Japan campaign for Flet's

Boss

In a weak advertising market, Nikkei Trendy estimates 5,166 brands disappeared from TV commercials this year while 4,719 new brands made a first appearance. The article also notes that TV spots advertising legal services (see Miraio's "typhoon man" below) and others for pachinko popped up on screens this year which may be the start of a trend as traditional advertisers turn to other media to promote their brands.

Finally, the reason for Japan's high suicide rate; A nationally successful ad campaign from Fits. :p

It's pretty amazing the way Asashoryu has completely rehabilitated his image.

The 'Typhoon Man' is the best of the bunch, and is the only one I see that doesn't use a celebrity (though I don't know about the AFLAC or DoCoMo ones).

Our agency has one hard and fast rule for creative ideas: anyone who brings up using a celebrity as a serious proposal gets smacked upside the head. Do it more than once and you're looking at getting fired for being such a useless sack of crap.

- It's an admission that you can't come up with anything better than 'get randomfamousperson to stand there and say "Hi, I'm Randomfamousperson, try this!"'
- They dilute your message because they're already associated with a half-dozen other products
- They drag their own baggage into your ad
- Their managers drag 10 times more baggage into your ad (Johnny, in particular, is an utter cunt to work anywhere near)
- They fuck up all your work with their personal scandals
- They suck up all the client money that should be going directly into your own pocket

On the other hand, Nori-P would be a great spokesperson for an internet provider. One look at her and everyone is thinking, SPEED.
