Enter The Void

Japan Times: On film, Tokyo is having one helluva bad trip
If "Lost in Translation" is the film you'd make when all you know about Japan are the pampered press junkets at Shinjuku 5-star hotels, then "Enter the Void" is what you would make if you never got beyond the Roppongi pub-crawl. Full of strip clubs, drug deals and loveless love-hotel sex, the latest provocation from France's enfant terrible Gaspar Noe follows the lives of several expats lost in Tokyo's seedier side...more...

Yeah, we 'owe' the guy the movie 'irreversible' with a 9 minutes raep scene of Monica Belluci

That's really not for the faint of heart and it's cut before the worst part where he stomp quite happily on her face her while she's still crying on the floor.

The guy seems to be the most flamboyant example of the failure of french insane asylum to keep their customer away from society.

Another scene shows one of the main protagonist crushing the skull of a customer of a gay bar (called "the rectum") thinking he was th3 raepist. And it's not an offscreen crushing... it's blow after blow until the skull disintegrate and then the gray matter start spilling on the floor while the rest of the body suffer form spastic reflexes. I don't think this kind of scene would be allowed to be shown if the victim was a dog or a cat because of the anti-animal cruelty laws.

Trouble being... without those few shocking scene... his movies are absolutely dreadfull... It's like watching a glass of tap water... with a turd floating inside for the shock value...

Tilt-shift photography, you've had your 15 minutes. Time to die.

Made Moviefone's 50 Best Movies of 2010 list...

Probably the most divisive film on the list, 'Void' explores the cycle of life and death as an overwhelming, intense series of moments -- graphic sex, traumatic accidents, abortion and birth are all depicted in an unflinching manner -- and that would be enough to confront most viewers. But what makes 'Enter the Void' so revolutionary is the cinematic approach to such human material; told from the out-of-body perspective of a dying, drug-tripping man, the film explores Tokyo nightlife and people's sensory excesses. Its a three-hour-long, psychedelic, colorful look at humanity that's not just a viewing experience, but also a senses-stimulating, hallucinogenic trip.

It is a good movie, but it does NOT explore Tokyo nightlife. There are almost no Japanese people in it, and Tokyo only serves as a visual backdrop for the film. The visuals are stunning in this movie and I really recommend it.

It was interesting to say the least but yes, might as well have been NYC.

Enter the Void took place in Shinjuku not Roppongi. The police cars had the "shuku" kanji on the car roofs. I stayed in a hotel, in Shinjuku, right across the street from "the Void" bar (it's just a garage irl). It's just funny to see the writer use an arrogant and condescending choice of words and still make easily identifiable errors.

Visually stunning is easily the biggest compliment I could give this movie, if not the only compliment. Sorry for bumping an old topic.
