US soldier crosses into North Korea after jail time
On 18 July 2023, Travis King, an American soldier who was part of a tour of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), which serves as the border between North Korea and South Korea, into North Korea and was believed to be detained by North Korean military personnel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_DMZ_incident Travis King, a private second class with the U.S. Army, was serving under United States Forces Korea (USFK) and was due to face disciplinary action after being held in South Korea for assault charges, and was about to be separated from the military for cause. King has faced two other assault-related allegations in South Korea. In October 2022 he assaulted an unidentified individual, shouted expletives at police officers and damaged a police vehicle in Seoul in October 2022; he received a $3,950 fine. King was also accused of punching a man at a Seoul nightclub, but the victim did not press charges. King had been detained for two months before being released to Camp Humphreys in South Korea and was being escorted out of the country to fly back to Fort Bliss in the United States
