There will be many slighted individuals who’ve had money withheld by landlords who can sympathise with this tenant.

But few would have gone to such extreme lengths as this Frenchman, who took a sledgehammer to the property in protest and filmed it all in a short clip entitled ‘vengeance d’un locataire’ (‘revenge of a tenant’).

After his landlord refused to give him back his €2,000 (£1,660) deposit, the man took matters into his own hands – hammering holes in a shower cubicle, a toilet and a doorframe, and breaking a mirror (among other things).

Unfortunately, with his actions now having been viewed more than half a million times on YouTube, he now faces the prospect of being tracking down by the gendarmerie and charged with criminal damage.

And it looks like that bill may come to more than €2,000 too…

Why was his deposit withheld in the first place? The article doesn't mention that.

I don't have much sympathy for this guy as there is no excuse for property vandalism. Yes I sound like a fascist property owner (which I might be) but I am also a tenant who has never had a deposit with-held. Yes I know there are horror stories by friends of friends of friends but I have yet to meet any one who has been directly on the wrong end of a bad landlord in person. Most disputes can be dealt with calmly and politely IMHO.

You forgot to add that it involved spending 95% of your rent to build a wall to block off the German^s entry (well, some of it) but then leaving the side door wide open anyway.

Someone keeping your deposit for no good reason is an excellent excuse for vandalism.
