Because the vast majority of FG who delight in giving other FG anecdotal advice on 'how things are done in Japan' are, for the most part, complete and utter wankers that are sooo full of shit it 'aint funny. ;)

Mc is my middle name. Same BS with the space, and me writing my name differently on forms than it appears on my gaijin card and passport. No one writes McWhatever with a space!

Good news is, renewed my passport this spring, and now no space. So, if you can ride it out til the next passport, yer golden 8)

i'm of [s]itlaian[/s] [s]italnia[/s] [s]itlaian[/s] italian origin along the paternal line so my last name is prefixed with a "De" followed by a space and a capital "C". that space has been a real pain in the ass my whole life, plus the fact that i go by my middle and not my first name, though i sign with my first initial and middle name or full name on legal / important documents.

i can empathize with the problem of the space. it's given me problems with anal beaurocrats, mostly from the bank here, whose sole purpose of existance is to make me rewrite forms. i've had trouble using their credit card for online transactions, especially yahoo and there have been other time-wasting problems. fortunately i got another card and got wise and just nixed the space on the original online app and they don't seem to care as long as i pay 'em on time.

and as i pull out my gaijin card i see that in fact it does not match my passport. the space is missing. i have been blissfully ignorant of this discrepancy for the last 9 or 10 years, as apparently has the town orifice. i'm not about to go rock the boat on this one.

I just renewed mine in September and there is a space, although less noticeable than the old one, and down at the bottom of the page where photo is the name is written along with the passport number for computer readers and there is a ">" between the "Mc" and the rest of the name there too

I'd never even noticed it, or had it brought up before this on guy at the ward office though, and since the only time I ever need to flash my passport is for visa and gaijin card renewal (where it's going to be compared to my name in katakana anyway), it's not a big deal to me, so hopefully it won't cause anymore problems over the next ten years. ;)

Like I said, I didn't notice mine for the past 9 years either. The guy at the ward office was just being anal I think.

I've had problems with credit cards and such but not related to MC in my last name. Mine is always because either my names (first middle last) are in the wrong order somewhere and don't match (for some reason the order on my bank account and the order one of my credit cards are different, in terms of where they decided to shove the middle name, one has it as part of the last name, the other as part of the first name with a space in between) or, the most common problem for me, the length of my full name...

My full name with spaces is like 26 characters long and doesn't fit on a lot of Japanese cards/forms/online forms...

This ends up leading to some places leaving off my middle name, while others insist it match the passport/gaijin card exactly, or the best one is where they just cut one of the names off in the middle because it didn't fit...

In fact, my original gaijin card couldn't fit my whole name and they had the rest of it written on the back in pen, so I don't see why if that is okay, the whole space thing is a problem :p
