Entering Japan What Do They Check

Postby Minihux » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:58 am

Hey guys,

When i went to New Zealand (still NZ citizen living in Aus) to get my Visa i needed to show the Japanese embassy a return ticket to prove im coming back etc. Now i have got my Visa do i need to keep this return ticket? Could i just get a refund and enter Japan with no drama or will the man at the airport require me to show my return ticket etc along with my Visa?

I want to get a refund because the ticket was like $1200 one way from Japan to Australia and its just dead money until i can use it which wont be for 12 month atleast.

Do they check these things when entering? Or is it safe to just get a refund?

Also wondering can i do my tax return now before i leave? Im gonna ring up and find out about this tonight or tomorrow but just wondering if you guys know?

Thanks! :p

You can't be certain one way or the other what immigration will ask you. Sod's Law means that if you do cash it in then you'll probably be asked for it while if you hang on to it, they won't bring it up.

I entered Japan last month with no return ticket and was fine, but I guess like Mulboyne says it's the luck of the draw. You might be lucky, you might not

The difference in price between return and one-way tickets is not that much. Fuel surcharges add to it though... Two one way tickets are certainly going to be a lot more expensive than one round-trip.

Along the same lines... If the few hundred $ that you might save by buying a one-way ticket are critical to you then I think you are going to face some severe financial problems in Japan as you try to set up house!!

I've never had more than a cursory inspection at Customs, even when I had no return ticket. But then, I always wear a suit and tie when traveling.

If you want to breeze through Immigration, try to look normal. Get a regular haircut, shave off your ratty beard, wear nice clothes, remove your visible piercings and cover your tats.

Ahhh very quick to jump to conclusions.

I bought the one way ticket to Japan along time ago and only found out i needed a return ticket so i had no option. I would have gone for the cheap one way which was like $300-$400 bucks but with this Flexi ticket i can get a refund unlike the cheaper one way ticket that i would not use besides showing the embassy, so it would be putting money in the bin. Its only to show them because i could not book a ticket to use in 12 months from my date of arrival in Japan only till the end of the calendar year which is no use to me cause im staying past that years end.

The price of two one ways worked out to be the same price as a return aswell. And that was not the question anyway was it.

Thanks everyone for advice, i will keep my ticket and refund after i get into Japan.

If you needed to show the embassy a return ticket to get the visa, then you are coming on a tourist visa or some other short term visa that requires you have proof you are planning to return within that time, correct? If you are on a work or other long term visa they shouldn't require you to show a return ticket at the embassy or the airport.

If this is so, how do you plan to legally stay in Japan for 12 months? If you are somehow planning to change your status or extend your visa (e.g. the famous weekend trip to Korea) then you might want to start thinking up a good explanation for the magically disappearing return ticket and the change in plans (entering on a short term visa and then trying to stay longer) because immigration has been a bit tougher on most of the easy scams lately. It's probably even worse now that they will have your photo and fingerprints all stored and accessible on a computer database right at the airport now.

I got a 12 working holiday visa, 6 month's then extend for another 6 month's. NZ embassy is different to Aussie embassy so they require different document's etc. Even my friend Andy who is coming along with me had to show a return ticket for his Aussie work holiday visa.
