Your gaijin card: not good enough for Japan Post

Postby yanpa » Wed Sep 26, 2012 12:16 pm

Japan Times wrote:Reader AM informed us that Japan Post no longer accepts alien registration cards as valid identification.

"Even though alien registration certificates are valid until 2015, Japan Post decided effective July 9, 2012, to no longer accept such cards. Please see this website," he writes.

"I found this out when needing to show identification for receiving a restricted delivery mail service document. I am a permanent resident. I find it odd, perhaps discriminatory, and certainly a bureaucratic overreach on the part of the postal service."

We confirmed this with Japan Post; it's true that they are now only accepting the new resident cards (zairyūkādo, 在留カード), which have replaced alien registration cards, despite the fact the latter are still valid until renewal or 2015 (whichever comes first). If you have another form of picture ID, such as a driver's license, this should work, or a passport if your address doesn't need to be confirmed.

I'm going overseas on a business trip next month. I have a re-entry permit, but I haven't updated my gaijin card to the new system. Think this will cause any problems?

Thanks.

Good to know. Thanks!

Since I have PR and an actual job, even in a worst-case scenario I'll probably just get scolded rather than gulag'ed.

If your proper address is listed on your driver license there should be no problems (in toyohashi)...

They like to have an idea with both token correct (Name / address)

Went yesterday at the post office, validated my ID with my passport,
name "Coligny": ok
adresse "MeJulie'sDad Sanfujinka" : ok
(yea, now I have a passport with a maternity clinic listed as permanent address, the fun -madness- never end)

No driver's license, I'm strictly a pedal-pusher.

The info on my gaijin card is completely accurate, it's just the old style.

I suppose the simple thing would be to go down to Immi and get the new card.
