Inappropriate usages of "tsunami" as a metaphor

Postby yanpa » Tue Jan 29, 2013 11:49 pm

Having survived[*] a M9.0 and subsequent tsunami, I find myself being increasingly irked by the metaphorical use of tsunami particularly when intended to imply something other than mass destruction through the force of nature.

[*] in the sense that I was in the same country when they occurred

For example:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/jan/28/one-billion-rising-feminist-campaign

Cool. Am I meant to imagine one billion wimmin, rising up out of the sea in a fearsome mass, sweeping a scythe of indiscriminate, large-scale death, destruction and nuclear meltdown across a wide area and leaving hundreds of thousands of families homeless, many weeping for loved ones who were never found?

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go and try and find a life.

I do hope this thread doesn't degenerate into veritable tsunami of feminist hate ...

Doubt that. Got no hate for them to begin with....just don't find most of them particularly attractive enough to get me horny like Coligny. (though to be fair, cheeseburgers and mcnuggets are enough to get him horny)
