Counting down to the crash into Tokyo Tower

New Haneda flight routes to take aircraft over central Tokyo

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the municipal governments of five wards in Tokyo have agreed to new flight routes for Haneda Airport.

As the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics approach, the ministry plans to alter flight routes and times to Haneda Airport in order to accommodate more flights to and from the airport. The goal is to increase the number of annual departures and landings from the current 90,000 to 129,000 by 2020.

Airspace over the city center has been off limits to plane travel, requiring aircraft to approach Haneda over Tokyo Bay and Chiba Prefecture. The proposed new flight routes will allow aircraft to fly over Shibuya, Shinjuku, Minato, Shinagawa and Arakawa wards, Fuji TV reported. Aircraft will be flying lower than the height of Tokyo Tower over inhabited areas as they take off and land.

Initially, the plan drew a lot of protests from local residents worried about noise and safety. Transport Ministry and Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials met with municipal government representatives on July 28 to gain their approval. Specific measures to alleviate the noise problem were not discussed.

Most of the extra slots at Haneda are expected to go to foreign airlines, a transport ministry official said.

What could possibly go wrong?

Nah, if something happens, they can just blame a foreign airline...

In this video there is a small bit about what they intend to do at around the 15-minute mark: https://youtu.be/52alcHBv-uM?t=917

This means straight-in approaches to 16L/R straight over Shinjuku/Shibuya and departures from these runways making 270-degree right turns climbing out over the city. Granted, newer aircraft like the 777 and especially the 787 are eerily quiet compared to the 747s of old, even on takeoff, but why not start by removing the restricted airspace over the kawasaki refinery to the SW of the airport so runway 04 and 05 become available for landing? That will save them some headaches right there and no AirAsias and Tiger Airs would need to be overflying central Tokyo just yet.

But I somewhat suspect that due to the all the buildings and cranes in the immediate vicinity the approaches from the NW will be unsuitable for standard ILS transmitters, so that leaves open the opportunity to make them RNAV only (GPS-based) and have them flown only by carriers which have received prior special approval because they need crew especially signed off on the sim and equipment on the aircraft that even in TYOOL 2016 isn't exactly standard. Or in simple terms, just so that only locals and proper airlines will be allowed to fly them ;)

Sorry to burst your patriotic little bubble, but no. Japan isn't quite as retarded about military airspace as China, plenty of civilian traffic from Haneda and Narita overflies Yokota every single day. It's nothing like Ramstein in SW Germany where there is a big gaping hole in the airspace structure.

I'm talking about the triangle to the SW of the airport:

In other good news Tacky you have a new mayor. And she's probably a lot better than you've had for a long time. Not saying much I know, but small mercies eh?
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

huh? j-rightwingers are mostly pro-merica and also have supported us forces being stationed in japan.
although im not a rightwinger but just a realist who think national interest is more important than patriotism, i, too, basically support the stationing of us forces here.
