Well fuck, that really wasn’t how I wanted to start the week! Everything shaking like hell with the phone blaring about 地震. 5.9 quake centered in Osaka, 10km deep.

Center is near my working place. I gave up my commute today, because all trains stopped.

There seem to be 3 deaths already. That includes one girl of 9 years old who was caught under a falling wall, which was apparently erected to protect school children against traffic. That is clearly a construction error, so it will have some implications for the people responsible for this wall.

Yeah, it was quite close to Kobe. Far too close for my liking. Anyway, daughter reports that everything is fine but it was a far bigger quake than anything she had experienced. A decent shake here but not the worst I have experienced. The odd (and tragic) wall notwithstanding it's very impressive how little impact quakes have these days.

About shindo 3 - 4, where I am. I would likely have slept through it, if it wasn't for my tablet, that blared its alarm, as if it were doomsday.

But I get it now that my emergency precedure is flawed. After the alarm, I should not first get my tablet, disconnect the charger cable, open the cover and check for where it's happening and shindo nani. Should run for cover first and then check the paperwork. If this quake had been closer, I could be dead by now, just because of bad habits. Must reduce dependence on electronic gadgets amd increase reliance on cave man instincts.

but i seriously suspect that some of the brazilians in hamamatsu and the neighborhood will go rubbery if the same scale quake happens there.
as for the slaughtering some korean in the great kanto earthquake, they were infamous for insolence and vicious crimes before the quake happened. where there's smoke, there's fire.
but of course this is just a causation. justification is totally another story, of course. yea
